Shinji's design was from the first chapter of Bleach. He was originally going to be one of Ichigo's classmates and some secret guy. Kubo fleshed him out later on.

Too bad he didn't do that for Ishida, Chad, and Renji.

Sakanade inverts the senses of whoever is under it, and when Shinji introduced himself he wrote his name backwards

Shinji's Shikai turns your senses backwards, or opposite.

Like, how to explain it... You tell your brain to look left and you look right instead, everything is backwards...

While that's true.. it's not like Menos just appeared. Soul Society has been fighting them, presumably, for hundreds/thousands of years. It's fine that Ichigo can fight them no problem since he's going through incredibly abnormal growth. But how is it that everyone else can suddenly fight something without any problems when less than a year ago, it used to paralyze them with fear.
