They managed to make this worse than my expectations, and I was expecting the worst chapter of Bleach to date.

Quite the feat.

This is the guy who took out the strongest introduced characters in the current Bleach universe with his sword unreleased, with no assistance from the Hogyoku.

Let's power him up.

His only plausible weakness was that he wouldn't be completely invincible if you somehow got the hogyoku out of his body. Nevermind, he isn't merged with it anymore. He IS the hogyoku. So now he's completely invincible, can die an infinite number of times and just revive stronger than before.

Oh, and to throw in something that's actually a little more relevant.

A lot of people were wondering how/why he had the Hogyoku before Urahara ever introduced it and possibly before he ever created it in the first place.

What's likely happening there is that he was also trying to create one, and the failed attempts resulted in those dissolving shinigami that happened in the flashback arc.

What we saw is probably just a failed prototype. He never got the real working thing until he took Urahara's final product from Rukia.

Yet I don't really understand where Kubo is going. I mean in most of the other shonen stuff I read/watch, the progression of characters usually spans multiple antagonists, not just some ridiculous, just as planned scrub of a villain. How many powerups do you need to beat one guy really?

The sad question is more like "How many more powerups does Aizen really need before Ichigo's victory is completely implausible?"

Ichigo slaughtered Ulquiorra (thanks to his full powered hollow form), barely beat Grimmjow (fairly), while the captains completely demolished the rest of the Espada (Shunsui demolished Stark with his shikai, and Aizen one-shotted him).

Aizen can still stop Ichigo with a single finger and was kicked around pretty harshly by Urahara and Isshin before he went completely nuts, and Gin was toying with Ichigo. Aizen has just killed Gin in a single hit.

How the fuck are we supposed to believe that Ichigo even stands a chance? Besides the obvious answer of plotkai, of course.

That's not plotkai. that's part of the plot that makes perfect sense and has been foreshadowed!

Sad but true. Funny, but I didn't really understand what was pissing me off about the story until you put it this way. Subconsciously of course, the story's obvious plotkai failings should piss almost anyone off.

Because it's simple, Aizen has committed the greatest sin an Espada(or in his case, Espada-esque) can do in Bleach; transform into a monster. Minute they do they end up being defeated. Look at Tousen, took hardly any time till he died after transforming. That or we could go with the fact that Aizen is a bug type now and the Old Geezer has an elemental advantage, take your pick.

This also works in Naruto when the Akatsuki remove their cloaks.
