well ichigo never had to go months/years? on end with two uberly strong badasses trying to kill him, when that happens you really can't afford to be merciful.

Honestly, I've always liked Luffy, even when he acts like a goofball. Mainly because he actually keeps up with his promise and outside of a few rare cases, never seems to beat himself up over being too weak. I know he has done it before, but it's not as bad. Him and Naruto really are very similar. They have their own way of the ninja/pirate (Pirates are superior, prove me wrong), they bring some comedy, they strive to improve themselves.. all that good stuff.

Ichigo on the other hand? While sure, he's sort of limped into power-ups here and there.. mostly, he gets his ass kicked in a fight, gets bailed out by the hidden Hollow side within him or whatever, or gets healed by Orihime.. just so much bullshit. If he didn't get power-ups at all, I wouldn't be sure he's the main character.

Except Ichigo technically had the power, he was just relatively unaware of it outside of seeing ghosts. He just borrowed Rukia's until Byakuya handed him his ass, prompting the whole training bit with Urahara.
