Why would it mean they were holding back? There has been some time passed for them to learn from their fight with Ichigo in that arc. Ichigo has gotten stronger since then and they could as well. Kenpachi couldn't communicate with his sword back then which seems like a likely explanation for what he may show us in upcoming manga. Also, Byakuya is fighting someone weaker than who Ichigo fought.

In Byakuya's fight with Ichigo, they seemed pretty evenly matched. Ichigo got the upper hand after using Bankai, but Byakuya came back, only to get messed up by the appearance of Ichigo's hollow.

heres a question thats never been answered i think.. non-hollow bankai Ichigo; can he go full out top speed (like when he 1st entered bankai vs byakuya) without destroying his body, or has he been holding back some all this time so it doesnt happen agian?

I know the answer is probably "kubo just hoped people forgot that happened" I just wanted to make sure it hasnt been explained away.

they've never explained it, but I'd hazard a guess that at first his body couldn't handle the strain of it cause he went all out for 3 days to get it then went right to battle a captain class shinigami.

i'll give you the point that byakuya is fighting a weaker espada, but come on, what's one month's time for a captain really going to do?

They were holding back. That's the main reason they ended up drawing and losing to Ichigo.

The only reason Byakuya lost was for 2 reasons. Hollow Ichigo, and his unwillingness to use his Bankai's true form to its full extent on Ichigo.
When they both charged at each other for the finale of their fight you have to consider how much damage byakuya took from Hollow Ichigo, Ichigo destroyed Byakuya's flowery petal sword thing because one of his traits is a large amount of reitsu(despite fully mastering it and being able to utilize it to its fullest. easiest thing to compare it to would be Naruto I guess.) and finally that after Ichigo "won",ichigo had to try his hardest not fall down and lose consciousness, while Byakuya was standing there easily able to talk calmly and then Shunpo away. Lets not forget that if Byakuya actually did beat Ichigo his sister would have been killed. so that probably had some effect on him.

as for "how could he get stronger in 1 month?" Ichigo got Bankai in 3 fucking days. something thats supposed to take at least 10years. Most of the Captains have been alive for at least 100years, while Ichigo's only been a shinigami for like what? 1-2 years? if less.(did they ever say how long rukia was actually in the real world?)

I'm not saying Byakuya is gonna be omgwtf strong or that he could even beat ichigo now. but i doubt he's gonna get beat by #7.

When bleach started ichi was 15 and they never said he turned 16 yet so I think it has been less then a year.

Also the head captain said don't kill the intruders in the ss arc and Byakuya follows all orders. So he was more then likely holding back a lot. He just got caught off guard a few times with ichigo doing bankia and turning into a hollow.

Ichigo has room to be one of the best, but he is missing key skills like control over his spirit powers and a few other things.

By the time Byakuya even got remotely serious he had already underestimated Ichigo... but then he got the upper hand again when Ichigo's Bankai crushed his bones. The only reason Byakuya 'lost' the fight was because Ichigo's hollow weakened him enough for Ichigo to GetsusExMachina him in the face and win.

Same with Kenpachi. By the time Kenpachi let loose and decided to fight at full power, Ichigo had already cut him quite a few times and Kenpachi was bleeding heavily... on top of that, he was weakened by the disharmony between him and his zanpakuto. Yachiru actually said it best. "You didn't lose Ken-chan, it was two on one!" She was right. Ichigo and Zangetsu were working together, Kenpachi and his were not.

Yeah both Byakuya and Kenpachi gave Ichigo the chance to win. Kenpachi knew Ichigo could fight with him and so gave him the chance to gather up the will and strength, he wanted a fun fight. Ichigo eventually caught up and it got Kenpachi off guard since he had just given up on Ichigo being fun.

Byakuya was acting tough like he always does but it was revealed he really didn't want Rukia to die, so I don't think you can say he was fighting at full power, and add in the understimation and the fight was nearly a draw anyway.

Ichigo in a fully rested state could probably take Ulq and/or a lower number with the proper motivation. But he's so worn out by now that he just can't compete. I mean Ulq -> Grimmjow -> Noitora if he could go through them all in a row he'd be far too broken.

My prediction is they win their fights, then signal a retreat with Orihime rescued. Aizen coming out and kicking ass wouldn't work unless they heal Ichigo because I don't think the captains will be able to take multiple espada and none of them can probably compare to Aizen even at full rested state.

Byakuya could have had all those swords fly at Ichigo at once if he wanted to. He even mentioned that, but said that he wasn't.

I'm pretty sure Byakuya is strong as fuck and they have been kinda hiding it the entire time. Wayyy back when Rukia was arrested, Kenpachi made a comment to byakuya and gin ichimaru was like woaaaaaah kenpachi bad idea. I think that so far, every fight involving a captain has still involved the captain underestimating the opponent and not expecting anything like what had happened. Look at Mayuri, he was going to obliterate Uryuu but he didnt expect that huge attack. Byakuya didn't expect Ichigo to go hollow, he's probably not even seen that before or just not in a long time.

We finally are going to get to see the captains fight at full strength since they can pass through the gate now at full power. Ichigo is about as strong as a #6 espada, and mayybe #5 or 5 1/2 as hollow, and like said before, he's only been doing this a little while. The captains have been doing this for hundreds of years, they might be up there with 3 2 or even 1 espada. I'm pretty sure Aizen is still retarded strong though since he was talking about breaking the limit of captain and getting double captain reiatsu.

I'm still expecting a fusion episode lol. Byakuya gets fucked up by Aizen, and he's like, protect my sister ichigo as I couldn't protect her or my wife, and take my reiatsu, and it flows into ichigo and ichigo's hair goes gold and spikey and shit and its also got byakuyas girly curler things in it.
