While not impossible people could've worked theirs out during the 18 months, Kubo kinda wrote himself into a corner implying shinigami typically need a hundred years of training and then some before they can unlock it. And as Renji displayed against Byakuya, just knowing it doesn't convey mastery. As is, we know the usual requirement of a captain is have a bankai. If we see Kira and Shuhei wind up being promoted from their spots, it's possible they might've. I'd consider Shuhei a stronger candidate for this since he'd been more hyped over time and his "fear" of his sword might convey a greater understanding of its spirit, filler arc aside. And while Momo is also in a captainless squad, I just don't see her being capable yet, as oddly popular as she seems to be.

Anyway, there's still a shit ton of potential kido to see, and it's something Ichigo's shown no aptitude in. It might be interesting if he starts working on that aspect of himself with the power reboot, but it's most likely we'll see new stuff from others. Would be nice to see Rukia not spam Sokatsui like a bad Ryu player does Hadoken, too. Otherwise, still some bankais of expected people to see, like Urahara. We also know jack about Yoruichi's sword, Nemu's (Mayuri's VC), Yachiru (silly Kenpachi theory aside), and to a lesser extent Isane's (she used it, but got curb-stomped by Ichigo before we could learn anything about it). I still want to see a good Unohana fight, too, as that was something Kubo promised a long time ago.

Shunsui didn't use his Bankai because Ukitake stopped him. He said he shouldn't use it where everyone can see, but I think it's because it has a wider range and would get everyone caught up in its ability. If it's similar to his Shikai, that could have all sorts of problems since most people wouldn't know they're playing and if only one person can win, but who knows what its actual power is..

It's possibly Yoruichi doesn't have a zanpaktou. She could have gotten in because of her being a part of the royal family, and the head assassin squad leader is usually made captain of the 2nd squad. She also could have a zanpaktou. idk.

Nemu probably doesn't have a zanpaktou. She was created by Mayuri.

Yoruichi used to be leader of the Onmitsukido (the assassination division) so it might be that her shikai/bankai aren't suited to the swift and stealthy fight style she likes... a little bit like how Sui-Feng doesn't like using her bankai as it is too big and flashy for her fight style.

She's meant to be a master of shunpo and hakuda... so she's probably just sticking with what she's good at ;3 And she's also developed shunko which combins her hakuda with kido...

Somehow i have a sinking feeling one of the Captains will be stabbed-memory'd into fighting against the others... I vote Kenpachi.

I hope to God that this isn't another Fake K-Town style fight that drag out for months while Kubo spends 3-4 chapters on each fight. If so, this crap won't be resolved until Dec 2012...Maybe Kubo's counting on the end of the world happening because he doesn't know how to end this..
