i always thought Kenpachi "let ichigo pass" because he had earnt the right to or just got that bored with it he couldn't be bothered

There it is. I see what people mean by borrowing power; I assumed that was some "omg fight by my side" nonsense when I read that. I guess the manga explains otherwise? Either way, it's clear that SS arc indicates jack shit about power levels.

Power levels are just something an author comes up with when he realizes a character has grown faster than logically possible.

Kubo kind of brought power levels back with the Espada numbering system. Even then he still managed to screw it up.

Just what is Kubo's obsession with reusing the same panel layout over and over. This is what, the third time we've seen the "obligatory person B behind the shoulder of the person A while airborne" template, and we knocked on Kubo for doing it last time with Ichigo and Aizen.
Clearly he's at it again.

makes for a dramatic angle? as much as i'm enjoying the chaos and i agree with it been a setup chapter i'd have at least like to have seen some real fighting (Renji never counts)

For a setup chapter this really wasn't bad, I don't think Bleach has ever been this grim before with all of these mutilations occurring all over the place. I'm anticipating a swift defeat for the 13 squads, since it wouldn't do much for progression if they won so early; there would be no point in bringing out Zero squad or seeing Aizen again who I'm kind of hoping they throw him in to put a few Quincy down, some Kyoka Suigetsu trolling would be fun.
And I'm forgiving "that panel" this week since it was a third party jumping in, usually he just has some dude shunpo behind while fighting, and everyone acts shocked like it's a new and unique move that's never been seen before.
