I always just chalked that up to foreshadowing Ichigo's natural affinity for hollow power. His mask had already been shown a few times by that point too.

So apparently in that Bleach novel it explains that Aizen feared Kenpachi's powers and kidnapped Orihime to seal them away.

Kubo later wrote a message saying that he was impressed by the writer picking up on the foreshadowing of Kenpachi's true strength as that is one of the biggest secrets he was hiding in Bleach.

I can kinda agree with that, Kenpachi definitely has the raw strength to be a potential threat to Aizens plans, but lacks the self discipline to make the most of his potential (learn how to fight without getting himself torn to pieces, learn his swords name, achieve Bankai, that kinda stuff). And what's worse is that he's such a big fan of the way he does things, that he has no motivation to change. Kubo has done a fairly decent job of balancing him out to a level playing field with the other captains.

I dunno if I would agree that Aizen feared him though, he's smart enough to know in his current mindset, Kenny is going to be capped at captain level, and that Kyoka Suigetsu is hax enough to deal with him if he did ever break that cap.

You never know though how hax they could've made Kens bankai if he needed it to fight Aizen. And since I know how we all love DBZ references, Aizen being afraid of Kenpachi is like Freiza killing off all the saiyans. They aren't even 1/546989326673526th of his power now, but you never know what it could be.
