My theory is that Kenpachi felt Yama being all pissed, and decided to let Yama have the final fight. He forfeited out of respect for the old man.

Doubt that. He always wants the good fights for himself. I'm not as much of a fan of Kenpachi like everyone else though. He is a badass and all but it's not like he's the boss of all of Bleach.

From the moment Kenpachi was introduced, at least to me, he was always modeled as the "glass canon" type. Limitless power but some noob that barely understood his power was able to cut you up something nice whilst diving into that "well reserve"? His Espada fight best reflects that. As much as we all love Kenpachi, one can't hold both an ultimate sword and an ultimate shield.

In that respect he as well as Byakuya aren't done yet but you won't be seeing much if anything from them til the end.
