So if the 5 members of Zero squad is more powerful than all of the Gotei 13 put together, then where does Yamamato fit in?

Is each member more powerul than Yamamato, or was Yamamato more powerful than each of them? He said he's still the leader because no one has ever surpassed him, but if every captain that get close to him or surpass him gets promoted to Squad 0, then that's kind of cheating.

If the members are not stronger than Yamamato, then Bach could easily kill each one of them. If they are stronger than Yamamato, then Yamamato was lying.

Well the line is only that the Zero Squad together is more powerful than the entire Gotei 13. Even if we assume that each of the five is only half a Yama, then the Zero squad still has three members to spare in terms of compensating for the rest of the Captains' combined strength. (The Vice Captains together aren't worth anything. They got owned by the Fraccion Right Arm monster that Yama beat in one slice.) It's conceivable that he was the single most powerful Shinigami.

The question then becomes why he wasn't a Zero himself. The explanation could be that he is supposed to serve as the anchor for Soul Society.

As far as Bach killing Yama, remember he did so after stealing Zanka no Tachi. We know that Bankai is key to a Shinigami's maximum potential since it's generally 10x the strength of a Shikai.

So we could say that Bach is only 1/10th Zero class status, but can still win fights due to basically limiting his opponents from using Bankai. Moreover, acquiring Yama's Bankai would instantly put him close to Yama's level. We know that Yama probably could have killed Bach at their initial encounter.

So we'll either see Ichigo surpass Yama, or somehow they will find a way to break the "Bankai steal" disable and then he can just be overpowered that way.

As far as whether the Zero members were in Yama's original group, it make sense since they would be powerful, but not quite individually at Yama's level. We don't really have a basis for how souls age in SS. Yama looks maybe 40-50 in that time period, but it was 2000~ years ago. And we have no idea how much longer he could have lived naturally. But I would bet against it actually because his Lt. looked like he was 20~ when it was 2000~ years ago and it seemed like he aged to the equivalent of mid 50's.

I'm pretty sure they said that reiatsu is tied to aging. The "stronger" your Reitsu power level is, the slower you age... Or something like that. Don't remember exactly what they said. Then again; that would make Unohana insanely powerful if she was in the original crew 1000 years ago, as she looks like she barely aged at all and he aged a fuckload.
