it has been a very long time since i looked into bleach again. Was kind of bugged away from the never-ending fights and whatnot. Friend told me to read the last couple of chapters. Now i read Bleach again because it has that kind of humor again in it (at least for a while) that i loved so much about the series.

Which branch was he the captain of though? Or was this before that all started?

Knowledgeable yes, but not necessarily powerful as the creator. Though that's typically how these Shonen work lol.

If you're basing this on the movie with Hitsugaya, I want to say that's not correct.

What we do know is that the sword and its abilities will vary based on the individual. If we want to generalize, every soul has a potential zanpakutou, they just either lack the energy to unlock it or don't receive the training to do so. From the sounds of it, this guy developed the training/technique to do that, of which point people who enroll in the academy get trained in your usual sword skills until a certain point where they qualify for shikai. After that, enter training and meditation, of which only the best achieve bankai.

Ichigo is obviously a special case if the above is true, but he did get stabbed by Rukia, who had gone through the process. So, there's probably some residual. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if this technique involves the shinigami getting their heart (or the vaguely referenced soul sleeve/chain or whatever mentioned very early on) stabbed by some special sword. This could've led to Urahara's inspiration for the one used to restore Ichigo, modifying a spirit weapon capable of working on a human.

i was basing it on what we was told by renji when he was talking/recapping his days at soul reaper academy (been years since i read/watch it) but i'm pretty sure he stated the Spirit picks the person the powers are there own

The sword chooses its master but they are born with the ability to manifest one. I bet what we will see is that Ouetsu discovered a way to put these spirits into compressed form so that 1) souls are cleansed by them, 2) they had a medium with which to concentrate their reiatsu, and 3) the user could manifest the spirit outside of their soul world.

I wonder if maybe one of the remaining Royal Guard members is the creator of Kido. I don't know if Ichigo would learn Kido at this point, but it would be cool if he actually had something else besides the overused Getsuga Tensho.
