Eh, I'd buy that if there was something super scientific we'd been presented with. Maybe the ability to traverse from spirit to living world. The mod soul angle has been covered, though, also somewhat under the umbrella of reiatsu management/replenishment. Bleach has been generally lacking in tech, so I can't think of much beyond that.

Their abilities all revolve around reishi manipulation. Hikifune inserted a soul into candies, Yakuza dude made the healing springs, Afro guy put spirits into swords, and I'm imagining the last two invented kido spells/manipulation or a way to condense spirit energy into a sword and transfer it to someone else (or invented a way to travel between worlds).

My guess is arms lady invented the transportation system (the gates and everything) and/or the communication system.

She said that the door to the science lab was a lot easier to open than when she was there, so she must be a recent addition since Urahara started the science lab, so that seem to hint at her being a new addition. There's also the "Shutara scale", which I assume is named after her, which too seem to hint that she's a scientist. Although I suppose it's possible there was some kind of science center before Urahara made the 12th division the "science division", since Mayuri was jailed for being a "mad scientist" - and he had to have been working with someone.

Since the transportation and communication system isn't really something that's of use to Ichigo, I'd actually guess that she was the one who inviented Kido. She gives me a "magic" vibe, with the way she said she put her hands on the door to open it, and that the lock was much stronger when she was there. The fat black guy does give a kido-vibe, but didn't he say something about him havign something to do with the strong power to restore the zanpakuto?

Here's an idea; if she was the one who invented the means of transportation, what if she, with that, discovered Hueco Mundo? That would certainly have a large impact on Soul Society. Your own private playground and training ground.

Besides; the ancient structures there has to come from something, no?

I'm confused about something. Urahara invented the gigai's. Hikifune invented mod-souls prior to that. I can't remember if it was explained during their initial introduction but were mod-souls just used for a zombie army before that?

EDIT: Found it. Mod-souls were created for Operation: Spearhead, to insert souls created for combat into dead human bodies to use as soldiers against hollows. The operation was cancelled before it was implemented and mod-souls were ordered to be destroyed. Kon and possibly a few others escape and still exist. -Chapter 15

Urahara invented the gigai? I thought he just made a few special ones -- like the one the Vaizard used and the one he gave to Rukia that began absorbing her energy.

They still use mod-souls for the gigai, they're just not combat mod-souls like Kon is meant to be.

Plus the whole social ramifications of violating the corpses of the dead angle to do it. Gigais are otherwise elaborate mannequins that basically get an AI installed with a pill.
