Because having his sword destroyed Bankai locked him. This will lead to the discovery that combining Quincy powers and Shinigami powers will allow him to obtain Bankai level 2 which exceeds the power of his FGT form since it was a flawed level of ascension.

Sounds like DBZ where Gohan and Goku stayed in SS mode 24/7 which allowed Gohan to reach SS2...I wouldn't put it past Kubo to pull something similar such as having Ichigo in Bankai mode 24/7 and then having a Level 2 which he can transform into.
