Holy shit! What a fucking cocktease and a half with Kenpachi, I literally yelled out "MAN FUCK RENJI AND ICHIGO!" lol. The turn of events with Ichigo is refreshing, good to see he isn't an instant expert with every type of training thrown his way and it's a great segway into his origin which means more Isshin.

EDIT: Also, I hate Kubo's style of character development. Learn about a character's history and motives? *bam dead*

I didn't interpret Ichigo as being "worthless". I saw it as Kubo's opening to finally begin telling Ichigo's backstory. The fact that dude said Ichigo was able to fight without the assistance of Asauchi only serves to state that he's a Shinigami/Quincy hybrid who's not even aware of his origins or latent powers. (He later states to himself that Ichigo should "step his game up," which means he'll eventually be returning to Soul Society regardless). He'll very obviously go directly to his dad and begin asking questions now, preferably after being emo for a chapter or two. It makes sense that Asauchi wouldn't accept a person who doesn't even know the backstory of his origin.

I love how Ichigo's development in the story directly contrasts Kenpachi's development.

I don't want to see anymore emo Ichigo. Everyone got tired of that shit a long time ago. I hope he does go to his dad though. It still doesn't make any sense that he got beat. Even if he isn't fully aware of his powers it seems he should have been worthy. When the 0 Squad guy put them in there he said something like, "They don't like how you have been treating your zanpakuto." I thought it was a matter of respect.. I don't know. Ichigo respects Zangetzu. I like unexpected plot twists but they need to have a reason.

I mean, Ichigo's sword is broken. So is Renji's, but Renji is a shinigami. He has other means of fighting, such as with Kido, which Ichigo doesn't have access to. It leaves Ichigo pretty uch completely defenseless other than his fists (and he's never shown to be proficient in martial arts).

Seriously. It's completely logical that Renji would come out victorious in this situation. We've never seen Ichigo use anything besides his sword to fight, other than when he lost his shinigami powers. And even then he was completely useless until he got a lolsword. Bottom line is, without a sword Ichigo is useless. Renji is not.

Orihime always had something she wanted to do. Ichigo's too busy putting his friends on a pedastal, though.

Ichigo took karate at a young age, whatever that amounted to, and basically was a streetfighting school thug before the events of the manga began. He is not incapable of fighting without a sword, it's just more practical to use one in a sword fight. As for kido, I wouldn't say he's incapable, just nobody's ever taught him.

Renji's big problem is he basically started off a rival to Ichigo, lost to him, and has basically been a joke of a fighter since. He lost to Byakuya. He lost to Szayel with Ishida's help. He tussled with some nobody hollows before Yammy took out him, Rukia, and Chad. He's slower than Ichigo, likely not as smart, and certainly not as strong if you want to use spiritual pressure as the gauge of that. His only advantage is having been a shinigami longer, but Ichigo doing presumably what only Isshin has done could imply Ichigo was also a better shinigami despite still being alive. Despite whatever training he did in Ichigo's time off, he also got boned by the Quincy.

We're basically getting double plotkaied here. First is to force progression with Ichigo. Other is for Renji to inexplicably get over his hump of mediocrity.

We have a few explanations for what happened, so this isn't necessarily confusing.

FGT pisses off Zangetsu
Kido is better than karate assuming he was even good at that
Apparently, Renji has trained to defeat his captain, so we don't know "power levels" (Doubt they're relevant here since they don't have zanpakuto anyways)
Ichigo has only recently returned to battle
Ichigo's new power was an amalgamation of multiple reiatsu from other shinigami

That's exactly it, he knows no Kido. Renji does. It's not that impossible to believe that Ichigo would be beaten in a fight without weapons, and for Renji to win in such a fight due to his Kido.

It has nothing to do with their fighting skills without a sword or their use of Kido or Renji being stronger for no reason.

"Asauchi deemed you unworthy, which mean you've been able to hold your own this entire time without Asauchi's aid"

Renji had help, Ichigo didn't. A page or two before this the dude comes out and says its because Renji is a true Shingami and Ichigo isn't.
