Ichigo's asauchi is that big fat sword he started out with when Rukia gave him her powers. After he gets his powers back his zanpakuto is always in shikai mode. At least that's my opinion. You could argue his first sword was also in shikai since the shape of it changes with pretty much every arc... but before he gets his powers back he never actually met/heard/saw Zangetsu. As far as Kenpachi goes... shrug. It has never been mentioned when Kenpachi actually obtained a zanpakuto or learned how to fight etc. Apparently he was just born one day with a sword in his hand and was able to kill anyone he ever faced ever.

But yeah, Kubo makes crap up as he goes a long. Unless you've thought out a plot from beginning to end it's easy to lose track of what you said before. I doubt he thought this manga was gonna last as long as it has. Still, it wouldn't be that hard for him to look up what he wrote before and at least try to spin it for his new plot, rather than using the same name and ignoring anything written previously.

Some of you really try hard as fuck to not understand the plot. Asauchi's are nothing but blank Zanpakuto's given/obtained by Shinigami's. The sword ultimately develops a conscious of it's own based on a reflection of the owner's soul and power and their relationship. This was explained literally in the either first or second arc of Bleach.

Yeah, I speculated similar a bit back. I'm still a bit puzzled about the whole asauchi thing and how none ever did something he wanted out of 'em, but maybe that's a translation thing for now.

I forget (and am too lazy to go re-read the chapters), but was it shown who was 10th division captain during the Turn Back the Pendulum chapters? I remember captain meetings and thought all captains were accounted for (unless they left 10th division out and during the few captain meetings and kept a shadow over someone's face). Was it someone who ended up becoming a Vizard? I'm just thinking, I remember during the SS Arc I think they said Hitsugaya became captain 50 years ago while TBTP took place 100 years ago so I'm guessing Isshin became captain in between somewhere then lost his position pretty quickly (at least in terms of how long people stay captain) if he's going to be out by the end of this flashback...

Well, Isshin is probably that captain that is mentioned to have "died in combat". This current storyline is probably around the "50 years ago" point where Hitsugaya took over since I'm assuming that Isshin is going to run off with Ichigo's mom at the end.

Late reply, but did they actually use the name engetsu in the manga, or is it from some outside source? All I remember is Isshin shooting getsugas without releasing or anything. That combined with Isshin talking to Ichigo about zangetsu like he was already familiar with it, made me assume they just had the same zanpukto.
