But seriously, I have read official translations from people living in Japan that read this manga. Ichigo's Zangetsu is the White Hollow (Shirosaki) that combined with his innate shinigami power inherited from his dad. The Zangetsu we have seen takes the form of Bach because it represents the dominant Quincy power. Never has he said that he is not Zangetsu and never has Shirosaki said he is not Zangetsu. Ichigo's power IS Zangetsu. Think of it in terms of his dominant form from the "Horse and King" chapters. When his hollow is in control, the inner world shows Shirosaki. When his "Quincy" side was in control, he saw Bach. His shinigami powers have never really dominated because 1) Ichigo didn't know where he came from and 2) Ichigo didn't know his hollow/shinigami powers were one and the same.

Now the reason I say this works well for this arc is because it gives Ichigo a great excuse to get stronger. Now that he can pour his powers into a medium (the Asauchi) he has a way to focus and really communicate with Zangetsu that he never had before. I'm sure we'll get an explanation in the next few chapters.

The reason I say it doesn't work well for the story is because you have to ignore all of the other events of the manga dealing with Ichigo's powers that don't directly deal with the conflict in his inner world. Ishida's remark about the color of his spirit ribbon, Urahara's prior knowledge of his Quincy/Shinigami/Hollow energy but failing to talk about it despite knowing about the Royal Guard and their ability to make Asauchi, the Bankai training with Yoruichi, the fact that his sisters also should possess Quincy/Shinigami power but never manifested them at all, and the whole Hogo-thing with Aizen knowing of Ichigo's origins yet during the Rukia-rescue arc he doesn't recognize him as Isshin's son (in fact, he doesn't even know him at all).

If you're not used to Kubo's retcons by now you really know nothing about Bleach. My arguments aren't built from denial about what will be in the future (because for all I know he might scrap Zangetsu and give Ichigo something else... although unlikely) they are built from observations of each chapter and how they relate to the entire story.

The entire manga is littered with terrific setups and tie-ins but is poisoned by numerous retcons and things that make no sense just for the sake of storytelling. Then you have great, in-depth explanations that spur dumb discussions with people who read too far in and go "LOLZ TEH ASAUCHI ARE TEH ZANPAKUTOU" without actually understanding the connotation.

I'm not going to explain this any further; I've said what I needed to. Stop derping and read the damn book and enjoy the damn bewbs.

While it's possible Kubo's intentions for Aizen changed since the Rescue arc, knowing Ichigo or not, he can pretty much get away with playing the, "I was just acting, bro!" card.

As for Ichigo's sisters, I still subscribe the "diminished potency" theory, where Ichigo got White and the brunt of his parents' potential, Karin got some, and Yuzu very little since it fits their ages nicely. There's still that red herring of seeing Karin in what seems to be a shinigami's outfit if I'm remembering way back right, too. Or at least her seeing Urahara.

Wouldn't pay the ribbon thing much mind. While it's true the shinigami show red, it wasn't implied that Quincy or other spiritually inclined folk give off another color, either. Ichigo simply having that in him could've stained him, but at the same time, he was also running off Rukia's juice. If there's a non-anime filler/movie reference to it after he gains his own powers, it could throw a bit of a wrench into that.

Last time the ribbon showed up was when Ichigo used it to find Zangetsu during his training with Urahara -- the second stage I think.

Karin in a Shinigami outfit? I don't think I remember that. I thought Karin was just meeting with Urahara and essentially filling in for Ichigo when he lost his powers.

Have they even used spiritual ribbons in, like, forever? I can't remember it even being mentioned since early in the Espada arc.

What exactly is wrong with Ichigo finding the red shinigami ribbon during Urahara's training? White/Shirosaki's powers arguably manifested during this time frame as well, since the first glimpse of Ichigo we get with his own "shinigami" powers is also with his mask.
