Low Gamma in game, dark pictures off the game :(

Allundaria just turned on the lights in my Avatar with photoshop and I just noticed this problem this morning @ class.

When playing the game on my laptop screen I have to set my gamma very low or the game is simply to bright. Lowering the gamma gives the game a little more "realism" and dims the lights some. When I take pics, and when I see posted pics of mine, they look fine. But when I go to another PC or when someone comments on my pics, they are very very dark.

How do I fix this?

Do I have to photoshop every pic I take? Doing this would be insanely time consuming and even though they would look good on your guys' side, it would look like crap on my side.

You might have to photoshop everything, or just change your settings when you feel like taking pictures etc. People editting their SS's isnt that uncommon, I know I used to edit mine to make them look better.

Ya know, years ago on my app to my LS, the first responce looked just like that

Im thinking I will have to edit the brightness to all my pics (I relize I resize my pics anyways b/c of my absurdly large resolution) The only problem in that I can see is going around editing pics and trying to think "is this bright enough for someone to see." Even going through my pics they look fine to me.

You see, Sept, the root of my hatred stems from the frustration caused by the the larger statured race in lowbie exp zones like Yuhtunga jungle, where when trying to zone a mob (see: stupid pullers) being slowed down crossing pathes with them ultimately causing my own doom.

I already hate stupid nub pullers, I have just extended said hatred towards the Galkas who get in my way while trying to hold on to dear life!

Ya I photoshop every screenshot I do. The natural output of the game under most conditions isn't optimal I think. Either its took dark like Tekki's pics as a result of gamma differences, or its too washed out like how mine come out.

The plus side though Tekki, is that the tweak I did on your pic took like 2 seconds I just used the auto-contrast function under the Image menu. Its usually does a good job at making FF things look nicer and pop out more. If it fails, usually under odd combinations of equipment and night/weather, then it takes a little longer as I do a manual Curves adjustment.

And in addition to cropping I like to reduce the overall size of the pic by at least 75% to compress the textures a bit and to smooth out the jagged edges.

Sounds to me that you need to ditch your party at the first sign of trouble so other people die from bad pathing...

You need to calibrate your monitor for the type of lighting environment you most frequently use your laptop under. Calibrated for a bright environment (room with large windows during the day), it's going to be bright, so when you use it at night, it's going to look extremely bright, and vice versa.

Eh tekki i'm having the same problem as you are, no matter how much I play with gamma ,the game is just retarded.

I never had this problem before, it was only when my last monitor died.


I did however play a shitload in photoshop, most of my "nice" looking SS have adjusted brightness/contrast.

Eh its just annoying. I have a huge external for my laptop that I dump pics on so I snap away 100mph taking at least 10-20 pics per event. I only crop and upload a select few and I'd like to not have to worry about knowing if you guys can see it or not.

I wouldn't really trust these... manual means of calibrating monitors, but this might help, maybe a little bit.

Just be sure when you're calibrating a monitor, you calibrate it in the closest lighting environment that you'll be viewing most often. Otherwise you won't see a damn thing in the daytime outside if you calibrate it for midnight in your cave of a bedroom.

You can usually adjust the global windows gamma setting in your graphic card control panel, and when you're happy with the overall brightness on your windows desktop and apps, you can tweak the game gamma in the FFXI settings app (it's available from your start menu in "PlayOnline")...and then you can tweak it again in-game if you use windower, by typing "gamma 70" under windower's console.

I think I remember noticeing that the brightness of the screenshots depend on the gamma you set in the FFXI control panel, but I'm not so sure about that. Would make sense though.

I used to have this problem on my laptop also, there's a program called powerstrip which will let you change your computer's gamma on the fly, or like ppl said if you're using windower you can just goto console and type "gamma 65" or something higher is brighter, default is 50 i think

I had the same problems for a long time, especially in the darker zones, like dynamis for example. This basically sorted it out. Hope it helps.
