Your FFXI name... What? Why? LOL? etc.

I knew I needed something unique because so many names had already been taken so I used Gwynplaine. It's the name of the main character from the Victor Hugo novel "the Man Who Laughs" (did not choose it for the writer F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre who named himself after the same character).

In the book, Gwynplaine is kidnapped as a child and has his face deformed and mutilated by the Comprachicos (they are bandits payed to deform children to become freaks for entertainment purposes or for eccentric royalty). Afterwords his face is permanently altered to look as though he is constantly smiling or laughing. Later in the book it reveals why they did such a thing.

Supposedly he's also the visual inspiration for the Joker.

When I first was accepted to the FFXI beta my brother wanted to name us Vargus from our all time favorite final fantasy. I didn't want to simply go with the exact name so we changed it to Vargai. Several times during the beta I got asked if I rearranged the letters in Viagra to create my name which got tiresome and people shortened the name anyway so I went with Varg for retail release. Also discovered that it was Swedish for wolf - which leads to occasional tells in Swedish which I'd much rather have than people asking about Viagra.

I made this like I made most of the names I've used for things: picked a starting letter, and then fiddle with a letter or two after and just keep doing that till I get something that works. Back when I played Diablo II a lot I had 5 sorcs (took me the 5th to get to a build that I ended up liking for almost everything) so I had to keep coming up with names (maybe I'm weird but I don't like being named something like Bill and then having a female avatar) and this was one of em.

Goes back a long time ago, my first D&D game i ever played, I was like 12 ?

I always was extremely bad at finding names for characters I would create, i hated writing fiction in school, and was given a totaly random name for a Ranger: Jarod. I wasn't too fond of it, But i kept it for the game's sake.

Eventually turns out our antagonist was a drow, with the name I am using right now. The game master never showed me the exact spelling (He took it as a mix of random drow names from a book about Drows), so i created my own interpretation: Drinh'Kinn

I stuck with it, and after a few games that didnt accept special characters or capital letters short of the first one, the name got dumbed down to Drinhkinn

I've been using the name for now close to 12 years.

I wasn't even aware that shit existed till I was like 20. One of my friends from a job I worked at back then tried to invite me over to his place to "get me into it".

My character's name is from Naruto. Back when I chose it, it was just introduced in the manga as one of the strongest jutsu. Since only the 4th hokage and Jiraiya knew how to do this jutsu, I thought it'd be pretty cool. Now I regret it because Naruto is a fucking joke and only knows how to do kagebunshin no jutsu and rasengan. >.>

- Carpentaru - my first craft is WW, so I made it for bazaaring arrows
- Hecatonchires, Thelxinoe, Thetis are named after the 3 greek gods

I got my character name from some dumbass in LOTR who didnt cast The One Ring into the fires of Mordor. Never really started joking about LOTR shit until about 7-8 months ago, until then it was just random dudes sending me tells going "OMFG WHY U NOT THROW RING IN FIRE?!"....now its LS humor.

*Edit: my mules have cooler names than Isildur.

Gospel: Biblical kinda shit, Mithra in Bastok...kinda wish i took this name as my main character.

Stoic: apathetic, non-emotional, etc....i thought "what word best fits Galkas?" and just named a Galka mule after that word.

Tried several retro Final Fantasy monster names... Shinryu, Whelk, Reno, Rude, Garland, Locke, and many more... all were taken.

Tried some JP-wannabe type names... mostly R-names like Rui, Ryko, Reiko... again, nothing...

Used the auto-generator and took the first name that came up... "Francisco"...

It wasn't bad at first. And then people started calling me Fran. And Cisco. Some called me Frisco. And the people who called me by the full name spelled it wrong every time. Franciso. Fransico. Fransisco.

And then more lazy people came along. Welcome Francesco and Franzisco to the server. Now I get spammed with tells asking me if I'll be bringing my shitty DRG to Dynamis. Oh wait... I never leveled DRG. Wrong person jackass. I've gotten Francesco's damn mistells a good few hundred times.

And then FFXII came along. Of course they name the damned viera "Fran".... Now I need to listen to that shit.

I'd consider the Delete/Remake character option, but that might piss off my friends with the [Francisco] HQ gear. Plus, if it goes awry, I don't want to risk losing my Black Belt/rare.ex gear...

Uh... I've been called Ice IRL for about 8 years, got it from a football coach. Ice was taken when I tried to make my name, and it happend to be cold outside when I started and thought of Blackice >.>
