Street vendor scam

Basically, one friend of mine (no, it's not me) bought some speaker from a street vendor at 400$ or something. Big surprise (not really), turns out the speakers he bought worth nothing, and he got ripped off by a few hundred bucks.

My questions is, is there any legals action he could do to get back some money or at least, mess up with those scammer. He lives in Cali, so I'm not even sure if the laws are similar to the one here in Canada. >_>

Keep the comment useful if possible, I'm sure he feels stupid enough about it.

But seriously, I doubt there's anything he can do, since he probably purchased illegal items anyways... and if they were legal and he just got owned, there's still nothing he could do I don't think because the guy could be gone whenever.

Well, it's pretty obvious there is nothing to do to get money back at this point, however, those scammer are doing something illegal for sure, and if there is anything to do to get them busted by the police, I'm sure he would be more than glad to do it.

Scam or stolen stuff, but yeah, it usually better to avoid buying anything there. If you want cheap risky deal, ebay is the way to go.

I supose people just dont think the other guy would have the gut to lie to you in your face and trust him. From what I heard, the guy had a fake websites he was showing people in front of the truck, and a fake magasine with picture of those speakers. That's how he convinced people to buy his shit.

Or even better, play mmorpg. Pretty much remove the need to buy anything for many years I probably spent less than 150$ in 3 years on games/useless crap (not counting my subscribtion fee).

If you think he committed a crime you can call the police and they can put him in jail.

To get the money back he would have to identify him and file suit in court.. will cost more than $400 in legal feels alone.. especially when you factor in the time he will have to take off work to be in court/etc.
