FFXI on PS3...does it work?

Recently I aquired a PS3 (no I didn't buy it myself...it was an unsolicited gift). My question is....can I install and run the PS2 version of FFXI on the PS3? Are there any known issues (i.e. lag)?

Yes FFXI is playable on PS3, someone in my LS stated they released a patch about a month ago which allows the game to be installed and played on the system.

Not exactly sure which update/patch it was, but Sony did enable HDD only PS2 games to be played on the PS3. Initially there were graphic glitches, which a later update apparently fixed.

I am trying to find the news article on it, but the general answer is:

Yes, you can. And B) it doesn't look to hot at all.

They did however add yet another update that was supposed to finally fix the jaggies in PS1 and PS2 games today, so that could possibly improve on the uglyness as well.

1. Install the PlayOnline™ Viewer
Insert the PlayOnline™ Viewer and Tetra Master® PlayStation®2 format disc that accompanies Final Fantasy®XI in the PS3™ system, and then select the disc icon.

As of December 13, 2006, PlayStation®2 format software titles that must be installed on the hard disk to play on the PS3™ system are the following:

If you have not created a game partition for Final Fantasy®XI, you will be asked whether you want to create the partition or not. Select [Yes] to create the partition. The partition requires 10 GB of free space on the hard disk and takes about 10 minutes to create.

When the partition has been created, the disc will be loaded. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PlayOnline™ Viewer. For details on the installation process, refer to the software manual supplied with Final Fantasy®XI.

2. Install Final Fantasy®XI
For details on the installation process, refer to the software manual supplied with Final Fantasy®XI. Depending on the product in use, you may need to switch discs during the installation process.

3. Quit the game
When the installation of Final Fantasy®XI has completed, press and hold down the PS button to quit the game. Display the XMB home menu and find an icon labeled "FINAL FANTASY XI" under the Game icon. You no longer need the game disc to start the game.

4. Start PlayOnline™ Viewer and Final Fantasy®XI
If you select the FINAL FANTASY XI icon and press the X button, the PlayOnline™ Viewer will start and you can then select Final Fantasy®XI and begin play. (PlayOnline™ Viewer and Final Fantasy®XI will be updated as necessary.)
