Console Battle: Wii vs 360 vs Ps3

I essentially see it as Wii is the system to get everyone to sit and play games in a very "friendly" manner. PS3 is the system you keep in your room for serious gaming, and 360 is somewhere in between the two. guess it really all boils down to what kind of gaming experience you're looking for.

This was the same situation with the ps1 vs. n64 I played my ps1 all the time alone for serious games but when friends came over we always bust out the n64 for some mario kart or goldeneye or stuff like that. And again with the ps2 vs. xbox vs. gamecube, it seemed like whenever I went to a friends house they had either an xbox or ps2 but sitting in the back most people had a GC in addition to one of the other systems and the GC was always the group system the party system.

Console wars.. I don't know where to begin really. I have been around video games all my life. I have fond memories of playing Colleco Vision, Odyssey, Atari, NES, & Sega Master System as a child. I have memories of every video game system for the most part. I was by no means rich growing up, but I found myself fortunate enough to have each of every system out there either by owning them myself or one of my two brothers owning one that I didn't. We used to team up at Christmas time and Birthdays, & if it was a year of new systems, we each would ask for different consoles.

Maybe that is why I view console wars a bit different. I don't see myself as loyal to any one brand or maker. I find myself loyal to games I love. Now, I know my situation isn't the same for most. I know a lot of people out there grew up with one system or another. These people that give their support to only one system really are "fan boys". I just wish they would not be as close minded as to limit themselves to one system versus several. They are only hurting themselves by depriving some seriously good fun & variety from their lives.

I have an Xbox360, Wii, & a Playstation 3. Some of you have seen me say in other threads that in our home, our Wii and 360 get used while our PS3 collects dust. Now that the PS3 backwards compatibility is fixed, we have moved our US PS2 out of the media room, but the PS3 only still plays a rare Blu-Ray movie, or an old PS2 game now and then. Will this be changed? Will we have fun gaming ahead with new games coming out some time this year? Possibly the answer is yes. The PS3 though as a game machine seems to be an afterthought almost. Sony was so hell bent determined to push Blu-Ray as the next generation media format that it became overzealous & tied the success of Blu-Ray to what they deemed would be a no lose situation on their PS3.

Personally, I hope they fix this some how, some way. The PS3 has potential to be great. But some times I wish I could slap the shit out of the executives who decided to hitch the future of their Playstation name to a proprietary media format. That being said, games that we are looking forward to are FFXIII, and Super Robot Wars(Import game). So many of the other PS3 only titles are like it or not being announced as cross platform. So we will wait and see which version of each game is the better and purchase accordingly.

Now for my Xbox360. I'm not a huge FPS fan, neither is my husband. We do own several of them though. I mainly use my 360 for Final Fantasy XI, and I download LIVE arcade games. We do use the HD-DVD drive to watch movies. I like the system a lot, I just wish they would incorporate a Internet browser & offer a larger variety of LIVE arcade downloads on a set schedule instead of maybe every other Wednesday. I am looking forward to some great games ahead, namely Blue Dragon. We have an import 360 and I can say its a very very nice game. I can't wait for it to hit the US shores so people can be amazed by it too.

Lastly our little Wii.. Some of you think it's a fad. Rightfully so. It does seem some what gimmicky & lacks staying power after the initial buzz will wear off. But... there is something... something unique to it. As many of you said, it touches back to bringing out the N64/Gamecube to have fun with a group of your close friends.

Every time we have family, friends or company over, one of them, if not all say: "Wii would like to play". It's made video games not be about the emo kid, graphic whore, fanboys sitting in their room obsessing about their next gen system. It's made video games go back to why we all should be playing them to begin with, to have fun. Back before we all became so jaded by specs and graphics. Back to when it was just about the experience of letting go and getting a smile on your face sitting in awe.

I have had to get my parents a Wii. I've gone shopping with numerous family members to get them. We are talking about adults, who never play video games. Yet, the Wii has converted them. I guess to the "hardcore" gamer it's something to be written off as a flash in the pan, but I think it will prove them wrong. I recall when the Nintendo DS was announced people were like... "umm okay, two screens? gtfo Nintendo is on drugs" Now look at it. If anything can be said of Nintendo, it's fun. Maybe their unwillingness to waver from that grounded sense of how to make you have fun is what will make them last.

Anyways, my predictions for the coming years are as follows:

1. Nintendo Wii: Winner of overall installed user base due to universal appeal & staying power due to increased 3rd Party support.

2. Playstation 3: Second place in overall installed user base because of retaining Final Fantasy XIII as an exclusive and MGS4/DMC3 etc as limited time exclusives.

3. Xbox360: Third in installed user base, but only because of poor sales in Japan.

I think the current sales figures would be much closer (PS3 and Wii) if Zelda wasn't released at launch, definetely a good move by Nintendo.

I'm still scratching my head as to whether any other Wii games are worth getting...

Zelda only sold around 1.2m copies, thats 2.8m+ Wiis without zelda, which alone is more than PS3 has sold and the PS3 has surplus unsold units.

i own 360 and wii. I'm not getting a ps3 anytime soon i dont think. Until i get some quality exclusives or multi console games that are substantially graphically superior, i wont be dropping 600usd on on it. I do hope the system soon becomes worth it, it has a lot of promise, but thats all its got atm.

PS3 doesn't seem worth it unless you want more than just gaming out of it.

If I'm going to buy a console, for the most part it will be for the games. 600 dollars for a console doesn't seem worth it to me; if you want it as a media center, then I could see it as a worthwhile purchase. I don't, so fuck the PS3.

Also, the Playstation controller always felt awkward to me. I like the 360 controller a lot more. Probably just personal preference though.

I'm not sure about who will win in console sales, but here's an interesting tip to who's profiting.

Just over two weeks ago, the Mario factory announced that it was raising its profit forecast by 20 percent for the financial year. Today's end-of-nine-month report shows that Nintendo was right to be optimistic--consolidated net sales were up 72.8 percent over the same nine-month period the previous year. Operating income was also up 102.5 percent.

The company claimed that it had sold 3.19 million Wiis worldwide--falling short of its promised supply of four million by the end of 2006. Nintendo maintains that it has manufactured four million consoles as promised, although only 3.19 million were "sold and delivered." The breakdown showed 1.1 million units had been sold in Japan, 1.3 million in the Americas, and 800,000 in the rest of the world.

During the nine months ending December 31, three Wii games hit the one million sales mark, along with 13 DS titles, and three Game Boy Advance games.

The Nintendo DS sold 18.9 million units in the last nine months worldwide, making the total sold 35.6 million. Software for the handheld had reached 154 million units sold worldwide, of which new titles made up 21.6 million.

Nintendo also noted that nearly 1.4 million Wii systems had been connected to the Internet, and 1.5 million Virtual Console games had been downloaded or purchased. Also, 3.5 million unique users had played games on their DS using a Wi-Fi connection, making over 100 million connections in total.

I don't know much about economics, but aren't companies supposed to make money? I think I see a winner.

egh, i don't enjoy the novelty of the Wii. There are really no games for it besides zelda that i like.

Same can be said for ps3, but with the Wii they are pushing the motion sensoring thing to much and i just find it annoying as hell to play with. I really have only played Zelda on my wii and thats it. No other decent games for it out right now.

Now for the ps3 i like it overall, it just lacks anything new. As of right now the graphics is all it has going for it. There arnt any games out for it right now, and the motion sensoring thing is pretty much gone.

The real winner for me right now is Xbox 360 it offer a lot of both of them + it offers the online gaming witch is always a plus.

The way i see it folding out over the next 1 - 3 years is that the ps3 will be in first aslong as it has a price cut with the wii in a close seconded. and the xbox 360 in a closer third.

all the systems appeal to different types of gamers, but since the ps3 does have alot of big hits going for it, i think many people over time will settel for the ps3

You have got to give the Wii and PS3 time people... you can't expect htem to bring the best games ever 3 months after their release...

Remember that TP isn't a Wii original either, so technically not even Zelda has been tested on the Wii yet, and basically any other Wii game currently out doesn't show the graphics capacity of the Wii because the same games are made for multi-platform...

When the true Wii Zelda game will be out, along with Mario Metroid and SSBB, only then we can tell how strong the Wii really is.

But for now, it's a pretty fun party console... and that's how I treat it.

Now as far as the PS3 is concerned, sure it doesn't have any good games yet, but my PS2 was dying anyways and I want to play my PS2 games still, so I just got it because I will buy it eventually when the good titles come out... so what's the point in buying a slim PS2?

And the 360 has been solid for me ever since I bought it back in July of last year... but you gotta remember that the 360 has been out for a whole year before the PS3/Wii, and therefore it already has some good established titles.

All in all, it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next year... when PS3 releases the new FFs, MGS, and DMC... and the Wii releases the games I mentioned above.

I don't play my ps3 much at all, waiting for the good stuff to come out. Wish I had gotten a 360, Vegas (yea its porting to the ps3, but 360'ers have a head start), GoW, and Lost Planet all seem like fun online shooters. Not that I regret purchasing the ps3, but eh.

Ps2 only had the socom series which were utter shit expect the first one, I need me some shooters

The target age groups for the consoles are 360 & PS3: 18-34+, Wii: pre-18 and the Nintendo Fanboys.

LOL, do you read this board at all. Yes this board has a lot of Nintendo Fanboys, but granted it's a board of gamers whose common tie is a game on a PC or a Sony console, based ona series of games on Sony Consoles, and Wii has a good following. I honestly don't see how Wii can lose, every gamer I know is going the Wii+PS3or360 route.

You are failing to look outside of the box. This website is an ant when talking about the community of gamers around the world. There are easily 10,000 times more people in the world that don't post/read on this forum that play video games. So with that said, please don't try to use it as an example of gamers or people that play videogames.

The controller for the 360 is the worst of the three consoles, Xbox isn't really known for their great controller design.

This is a joke of a statement, the Dual shock design has been outdated since the N64 came out. The Alien hand taught us that analog control deservers the prime thumb resting location, and that vibration was the next thing for controlers. Yes there is a chance that PS3 will eventually get Vibration, but the digital pad will still be poorly located

Lastly, I'm with BRP on the good games thing, 360 has a bunch of good games out. I'm not going to lie to you and say I'd buy a system for Dead Rising, but the combonation of Dead Rising, Rainbow Six:Vegas, GoW, Splinter Cell and Condemed and you've got something.

Call me a faggot but I liked PD:0 also, it really does play a lot like the original, it's just the original was like 8 years old at that point.

Obviously you don't know much about any of those titles. Two of those "good" games are also on PS3, and Condemned is a game that was brought over from PC. Only 2 of the 5 games you mentioned are exclusive to the 360. Also PD: O was hardly a good game and didn't live up to all of the hype it received pre-launch. Xbox 360 only has a few good titles out most of the others are on other systems or are sub-par. I think the only thing at the moment that consumers who purchased a 360 have looking forward to is Halo 3. However, after two Halo games Bungie and Microsoft are going to have to work really hard to make it attractive to new players as well as old ones.

Nintendo traditionally has always made money on their systems by selling them at cost or above cost. Sadly the same can't be said for Microsoft and Sony. The current generation breakdown is as follows:

Playstation3: 20GB MSRP is $499 which is a total loss of $306.85. 60GB MSRP is $599 with a total loss per system of $241.35.

Xbox 360: HDD-Pro Xbox 360 MSRP is $399 & has a manufacturing/materials total of $323.30, meaning a $75.70 profit. This is a relatively new turn around though since for a long time after launch the Xbox360 was made at a loss. It wasn't until recently that the system started turning a profit.

Nintendo Wii: MSRP is $249 & has a manufacturing/materials total of $160, meaning a $89 profit.
