Semi off-topic: does typing /c [name] bypass the equip swap defense? I seem to recall that it did, but I haven't tried it in a while.

I never did figure them out before he RMT'd his account.
Oh yea he MPK'd my level 20 pt in Qufim one time because someone checked him. The sad thing? He had a bazaar up at the time.
As much as I can't understand why people get overly dramatic about being checked, I also can't understand why people check other people at all.
I don't really care if people check me... it just makes them look bad. The only people that run around checking people are inexperienced players who can't tell what kind of gear someone is wearing from the pieces they see or people who are too concerned about what gear other people have.
they want to know whether yours have white boxes or not >.>Originally Posted by Taku

Fuck that shit, checking someone is NOT the virtual equivilant to staring at someone, its looking at what gear they have for 3-4 seconds then moving on with my life. People confuse RL with Online personas too much.Originally Posted by Kyreth
He has to if it bothers him. I dont have to ask, the game mechanics make it so I dont need permission. If they have a problem with it, then take it up with SE, and not harass me/spam check me/hop on his mule and spam /tell me what I assume to be offense things in Japanese, which arent offensive because I cant read it.Turning off the notice works fine, yeah- but the point's supposed to be he doesn't have to. Asking is supposed to be enough (if anything, you're not supposed to in the first place- ask first, get a response then check is the polite thing to do - it indicates you're not treating the person in question as not being an object of distant contempt but rather polite curiousity.), though. Most JP players don't have a problem in the world if you ask first and the ones that do are asses by anyone's standards.

I got more apologies that way from shocked JP players that way.../check without saying anything = "WTF are you doing here, you look like a n00b" = you're an ass.
So's /slap spamming you all day or MPKing you with the local NM's. Lemme go find that AF mob in Valkrum and start killing off all the Dunes PT's with it for a while, it's built into the game so it's polite to do.Originally Posted by zoobernut
The point of there being a message is precisely that- so people DO know when they're being stared at/looked over. It does add to the feeling that you're not alone in the game world when people actually look at you, doesn't it? Heck, take /slap. Putting that in pretty much guaranteed you could be rude if you wanted to be-and part of being polite is NOT doing something just because you can.i guess i really dont understand the concept of getting mad or thinking an action is "Rude" in a video game where there is no concequence or direct effect on you by someone elses action. and like you said worst case scenario someone checks you and your wearing gimp gear and they are rude to you as a result of the gear you are wearing but that is not the action of checking that is rude it is how the person deals with that information that is rude.
if there was no message indicating you were checked and there never was a message then i dont see how it could be viewed as a rude action if you never knew it was happening. the only way is if someone told you they checked you. but then it wouldnt be rude to check someone it would be rude to discuss someones gear with them... at least thats how i see it.
Be polite. The classic version of the golden rule applies (not "He who has the gold, rules" ) - do to others as they'd do unto you. For them, checking without asking is rude. Be polite. Ask first. A lot fewer people would be/act like assholes in FFXI if we knew a bit more about other places and their social rules.
Or you could just sneak up behind them and "/em pops a finger in your butthole" instead. Up to you.
Or they can just remove the sand from their vagina and filter it ??Originally Posted by Kyreth

evidently yes, lol
Or we can stop calling characters "toons", am I right?Originally Posted by NynJa
Pot-kettle-black, NynJa. They're gearswapping because it's one way to tell someone indirectly to stop fucking staring at them, because the game mechanics allow you to stop many /checks by doing so.
It annoys many JP players if you check without asking. People who know that and keep doing it are just being assholes themselves. It'd be like knowing you were reading a thread and editing every time someone uses the word "character" with a replace of "toon" in every single post. Just to get some sand in your vagina, ya know. Because there's no wordfilter for "toon" on BG.

and in regards to a feces flinging fest with Nynja, you're barking up the wrong tree chodaboy.
The only problem I have with checking is when it's spammed. That shit is annoying gtfo.
Alot of posters here share the same thoughts that baffle me. I can understand not wanting to be checked. Not me personally, but I can see how some behind the times, Japanese players might find it "offensive". Even calling it offensive is overstepping the mark, unpleasant at best.
Having said that, if it bothered that player soooo much to the extent that after I checked him once, he felt the need to send me a /tell then I would definetly reccomend the filter to him. Does he ever go to Whitegate? If he did he would probably quit the game, as his time would be spent being offended and /telling about 50 people at any one time.
It was hypocritical at best, he was the person being rude to me![]()
Also, someone brought the point up about not wanting to be checked yet wanting to know when you were checked. That is fucking stupid. If you dont filter, you have no right to say shit to anyone who examines you, unless they spam you (but if you filtered you would be none the wiser, see a pattern??) Anyone who doesnt want to filter, yet gets pissed when examined is a drama whore, because thats all they want/are asking for.
At the end of the day, SE gets another GG for changing the examine message between the JP and the NA/EU clients.
Meh. I'm saying it cause it's true, chucking shit at NynJa is not the goal. Socially speaking, all cultures have hot buttons. Knowing they're there and pushing them anyway is being an asshole. It doesn't matter if it's commonly done. That just proves FFXI is full of assholes. (Like it needed to be, or any other MMORPG, or the Internet being such.)Originally Posted by Mysterio

It may get messy, all I'm saying.
If /checking someone made their entire party lose exp and either recover for a few minutes or disband, then those might be somewhat equivalent. Not today, though. And "/slap spam" is hardly equivalent to "/check once". Spamming /check is just as annoying as spamming /slap, and I don't see why it should be more or less so.Originally Posted by Kyreth
Man...that could be hilarious though, in the same way that a swarm of piranha is hilarious to a large, bleeding animal. /slap someone and they lose 100 exp, but it has a 3 minute cooldown. So you get entire linkshells (or armies of multi-boxed mules) swarming after some asshat in whitegate, and they can NEVER GO TO THE AH AGAIN OR THEY DELEVEL. AFK in front of the mog house in Whitegate, and come home to find yourself level 73. That would clear up some "congestion".
But yeah, /check doesn't do that. I feel like people who go ballistic at one /check are just constantly walking around looking for a fight, like "I hope he checks me so I can go off on him, because it's so rude." I have a hard time taking their side.
exactly what i was thinking Bakthi, Kyreth tha still is not an equivalent situation because /check someone once HAS NO consequence. again ill bold this so its emphasized the only way anyone even knows they are being checked is that message beyond that /checking someone does nothing else. yes spam checking someone is annoying but so is spamming anything else in this game. and as for /slap yeah /slap is rude but if i had my filters on to filter that text out that says "Name slaps you" i would never know that someone slapped me and i would not care at all because /slap doesnt do anything to you. in addition to that if there was no /slap message to let you know someone slapped you i wouldnt run around pissed off at people because they might be "slapping" in a virtul game without my knowledge.Originally Posted by Bakthi
I guess the bottom line is that no one seems to offer an explanation as to why its rude to check someone in the virtual game, so far its just been a lot of "its rude dont do it!" and "i dont know why its rude but it just is"
/em examines you.
