Most of my friends were gone or split amongst several LS, and all the glaring faults of the game, which basically means the absolute dependency on other players. Even when they're not absolute fuckups you're stuck wasting time sitting by the trail markings waiting for people to show up. One day I just realized that it wasn't fun, all the fun and excitement was gone, and I felt a hatred for the whole big scam that an MMO is. I quit.

When I get bored in the game I usually visit forums. Sometimes reading about ffxi is a lot more fun than actually playing it. But the inverse of that also applies too.

I enjoy a lot of things in the game. And even though sometimes I am guilty of starring at my moogle for hours, you just have to set some goal and figure out how to get them done.
I agree 100%. I've been playing for about 3 years now, and still have not completely decked out my PLD. NIN is just about complete, and if you look at my sig you'll see that I've leveled a multitude of jobs. With each job leveled you get to see a real different side of the game, and that's what keeps it interesting for me.

Being in the UK and on lolSylph was pretty much hell so i think the only thing keeping me from quitting for good is the friends ive made. My biggest goal was to kick Walka (fully merited Galka MNK)'s ass 1v1, sadly that never happened and he quit during my long break from 11 , but now im back and need to find a new goal.
Obviously my addiction to FFXI was too much to break...for now.

I ultimately keep playing because I enjoy spending time with my friends in game & doing events with them.

If I hated my entire server then I'd have quit a long time ago.

I guess like most, I stay because of my friends. If someone had asked me years ago if I'd play the same game for 2+ years, I definatly would've said no, lol. (This was my first MMO...)

I always said to myself, I would never ever pay a game to play it per month. Why would I when so many are free. As I grew older I learned more about networking, computers, etc. As I worked for my IT degree, FFXI came out. I never played a MMO game before and a few buddies of mine told me about it.

By the time that came I complety understand why we pay per month. This much bandwith from this many people, that in intself is very costly. Having access across multi platforms, the content they pump out. Yes, compared to alot of non-pay per month, they do put out alot. I have played shooters for years and you're lucky if you get new maps every few months.

As for why I play, there is SO much detail I think so many people overlook. I'm amazed at how just being a certain day can effect things. All your stats, the ginormous world, and the people i've met.

Also, it's not terribly easy either. One reason I care not to play other MMO's because i've heard time and time again how EASY it is. I never play single player easy, why should I online?

    I like challenges, tests, etc.

My first reason would be 'my friends', but this would be a very close second. The details still amaze me, still make me smile RL, even three years later. Sometimes I just stop and stand there, watching the beautiful full moon rise on Lightday. Sunsets, shadows, watching mobs walk around. I love to see it all.

People have mentioned the loss of RL interaction with friends, but the "love of details/looks" has a downside as well: So often I've gone outside, spotted the moon, peered at it, and wondered what the hell was wrong with it. Why's it so small? So dull? ...oh yeah, that's the way it's supposed to be...

Maybe you should level another job that isn't just some sort of merit-whoring, flute-toting troubadour who does a bit more during those big fights or raids than running around singing songs.

    Just a thought.

Kujata drama isn't as good as this Lance shit.

Reason I play are my friends. They keep this game very enjoyable. Also, TS is great :D

The only thing that keeps me playing is the good people I've met over the years. I'm so over the whole OMG FFXI rox stage. Friends, kicking in on TS for events, and making fun of my friend who has capped blist (seriously almost 200 people)

Thats one of the few things that kept me playing, but there are only so many ways you can flail nidhogg so it got boring after awhile.

If you don't like the game, quit. It's as simple as that...
Why play a game you don't like? This isn't work you know you are supposed to have fun not play it as it is your job or something.

and those who are on Midgard all hope the same.
    Zing...

Ultimately, I'm not surprised by all the "I'm here because of my friends" comments. I remember when EQ was going down the shitter post-PoP, WoW was on the horizon and others were expanding out to other games, the question of the week for the community at large was usually "Why the fuck am I still here?"

Survey says... Friends was the number one answer. I still have a bunch of friends that are playing on Midgard, and I likely won't leave because of that. It's good company compared to the past MMOs where I've had to strike out on my own (hi2u WoW).

The other part of it is the other MMOs just don't interest me. I played WoW before I started playing FFXI, at a time when everyone else was doing the opposite. These days, I go to KI or some other forum and hear people rant and rave about WoW and how FFXI is so inferior, despite WoW's flaws (I'm looking at you WoW PvP). It's always boiled down to the same old rhetoric: my game is better than yours, nyah. But in reality, I blew through levels with a Rogue and a Warlock in no time. I didn't feel challenged at all, and that turned me off.
