I'm gonna assume it was previously working, so first of all, do you have another IDE cable you could try?

    IDE cable:

It's the thingamy that connects your CD drive to your motherboard.

Hell, it's possible that it's worked itself loose. You should also check the power connector that runs into the back of the CD drive.

it's the grey cable that goes from your cd drives to the motherboard. make sure there firmly seated, and if they are, try swapping the cable.

This is on a laptop, I guess I've got to find a small screwdriver.

On a laptop, don't take it apart.

Hell, I don't take laptops apart if I can avoid it.

    Is it still under warranty?

It should be, its only around 5 months old. Is there anything else that could be the source of the problem?

If its not detecting the drive, it's usually the IDE cable.

Don't open your laptop, take it to a repair shop or w/e it says to do under your warranty if its still valid.

It came with my laptop when I ordered it. I think you can get it off the alienware website.

Well it looks like Alienware, I'd just send it back to them and have them fix it. It's very likely that if you open the case you'll void the warranty.

One option is to hop into your BIOS and check the settings in there, see if it's recognised in there.

Don't look in the boot order for it, look for the list where it shows your HD/floppy etc.

Yea, i'd just advise contacting alienware to get the warranty work done, don't open it up yourself, and just hope alienware don't put you through what my friend went through when his lcd went out.

Is it one of those hotswapable cd/dvd rom drives?

If so check and make sure its seated all the way in by unseating and reseating the drive.
