    lol funny stuff... good job

but like many said... the potential if this had been kept secret and used exclusively against the RMT would have been huge... it coulda been like the secret service or some sort of underground anti-RMT mafia... This is what the Special Task Force should have been like

i can just see every time an RMT claims ulli they get d/c'd , or Tiamat/Kings (on some servers), Kirin, lesser NM's like King Artho.. or even the Jeuno NMs / oztroja... all those RMT alliance xp parties wiped everytime they log on,

my god this could have been huge

(unless you have another trick up your sleeve D; )

The fact the GM could reproduce the exploit is kinda scary too.

(in the sense that most people think GM are fools)

I'm sure GMs have an easier way to d/c players since they also zone you, move you, etc. They can probably just cut your connection to the server.

Any event, it is too bad that you know someone would use this to stir up HNM drama regardless of the bigger RMT issues.

I think they said one time that it takes 2 hours just to reboot the servers after the change is complete, lol.

Luminous is the guy who helped me out when I accidentally chucked my Bibiki Seashell and item restored it. Be nice, Taj. He's good peoples and as you can see, has a sense of humor.

(And proof #9000+ that GM's read BG, too. Truly, they lurk moar.)
I've talked to him too and he was alot nicer than thought he would be from the screenshots I've seen (he said he's seen them too).

Taj, you are the FFXI equivalent of the South park guy who was nearly The End of the World (of warcraft)

    Keep up the good work

Hmm, I'm still a bit confused. How exactly are they being disconnected?

    1. Their Clients crash (throw unhandled exception) to desktop, and thus they DC
    2. They DC due to the server crapping out

At first I thought that he was just crashing the client, but the story a few pages back about "All the Tanks got DC at Aspid" didn't mention his client throwing an error, just flat out disconnected.

For me, whenever my client throws an unhandled exception FFXI continues to run because the lovely .NET "JIT Debugger" window pops up. I can just hide the popup in a corner and continue playing FFXI lol.

He mentioned a few posts later that it was a crash and not technically a d/c

I wouldn't be surprised if someone with 500+ posts here is a closet GM.

It was a simple R0, he (I don't think it was actually him, he was probably corresponding with a developer in Japan) literally exploited a buffer overflow in the client, which not only caused PlayOnline to crash, my system lagged for a good two minutes.

That has nothing to do with the Just in Time debugger. The reason you can keep playing is because the Unhandled Exception occured on a spawned thread (FFXI creates a lot of threads that aren't terribly important) which means the main thread doesn't become suspended. This happens to people that don't have the JIT debugger as well.

Edit: Shit double post Kind of

    This is crazy. GJ Taj!

So basically what I'm understanding is...you wrote some sort of program, then you type into chat log, it automatically filters it and changes it to a different statement that boots anyone that can see it?? (not necessarily see it, since they get kicked before it makes it to their log) wow, that's pretty fuckin' awesome. Do you have to turn on your own chat filters so you don't crash yourself when you do it? Or is the code written in a way that you are safe from this?

Pretty sure Taj said earlier he needed to use his own chat filters, but if he's using a port loop to tinker, he could probably stop it from ever getting to his client, it'd just be extra coding rather than a button click in-game.
