True, but the truth is that for every 1 bug like this that is discovered, there are probably 10 more waiting to be found. The same is true of a lot of software, but it's especially bad in FFXI.

I think ppl would pay good gil for that tool. You could be on mule outside of ls when someone claims hnm wait till its at like 50% do it make sure ls that pays you atleast half blk list you then they claim an kill. But some of there ls will have to dc or will look to fishy. If i was hnm leader i would pay atleast 1mil for that right there.

It looks the same to people on the outside though. But yea, if you got R0 and didn't actually have POL crash on you, it was something else.

I'm more than sure this is the actual "cause" as to how he can make other people crash at will. The implmentation escapes me, as I'm no programmer.

How would anyone be able to single out Taj as the one causing the DC's, assuming he's not the only one still around after it happens. Someone has a hunch that a certain character is being ran by Taj, and they GM call him, then a GM tracks everything he's doing? Doesn't seem very likely he could get caught, but I know absolutly nothing about what's actually going on.

Your talk about darters and counterstrike confused me. Trying to draw an invalid glyph doesn't have much in common with missing data files or broken AI.

looks like he's seg-faulting the clients by somehow injecting an offset into the renderer that ends up pointing to a protected memory range. Should be an easy fix for SE if they figure out how he's doing it.

Good thought, although there's lots of 0s in memory usually. You'd probably hit one that accidentally terminates the string before something catatrophic happens.

I just looked at a UTF decoder and there are certainly ranges that are invalid (they trigger an exception in my little XML parser here)... although again, it's not really certain that this will crash the client even if their error checking sucks. Not even sure which character set FFXI uses, but it's gotta be a multi-byte encoding probably not dissimilar to UTF.

Cue "stop trying to guess it you assholes" comment.
