Look at the bigger picture, the power of being able to crash anyone you want or any area you want. I want you all to think if you had that kind of power for a second how many of you would actually bring it to SE's attention? keep in mind you could get any item you wanted by using this method on groundkings/sky triggers or money NM. I think turning it over to SE was a noble thing to do.

Turning it over really is not noble because Taj sacrifices nothing by doing so. Trust me, he could do a lot more if he really wanted to. It's not like he's giving the GMs any lee-way whatsoever here. He just some funny screenshots, and that's what he got.

*EDIT* In Toth's defense, his Puppet was doing some pretty good damage to Cerberus. As good as a SMNs? Probably not, but it was doing fairly well nevertheless.

Except, it already was broken. Taj didn't introduce a new bug into FFXI, he found one that was already there. It would be more like your Doctor telling you he found a benign tumor that could one day turn into cancer that could kill you, or it could just continue doing nothing.

Those examples are really the same - the possibility of damage is there in either case, it's just more likely to be problematic/exploited in Skjie's case. And we can't tell what the likelihood of this unknown-character-chat-log thing actually being discovered by someone with malicious intent is, so Nystul's analogy is pretty good.

I much rather have it fixed now before someone else that really can find this exploit finds it and completely ruins the game until the GMs figure out what the fuck they are doing, and then just ban those people insted of fixing the problem. Taj told them EXACTLY how to fix the problem, and they fixed it before anyone else got ahold of it.

I doubt the chance was that small. Once you know what you're doing mucking about in the internals it's just a matter of time before you find stuff like this.

It does take some technical skill, but there are a lot of technically skilled people that play the game.

Still, Taj didn't "save us" from anything other than his own mischeif. The exploit was probably going to be discovered by other people since enough hints had been introduced through that thread. Might as well get it patched before people with more than mischeif on their minds get it.

Like I really care that the servers are down, you should know better than anyone that I struggle to stay in game for more than a half hour a day.

@ Lordender: I'm entirely of the belief that the only reason they were even told about it is because he's just as capable of finding another way to do it if he hasn't found it already.

I'm not registering for alla just to point this out, but you might want to mention that the solution Taj gave to SE didn't require the servers to go down.

It's going to be funny when they release that this emergency maintenance really had nothing at all to do with Taj and instead was to fix a completely unrelated error - say, the cell drop rate in certain Salvages (hey, I can dream can't I?).

A problem was introduced by Taj. Prior to him using it, no one had knowledge of it (although claiming that you did have knowledge after the fact is easy enough to do, not so easy to prove); and he proceeded to abuse the problem which he introduced, at the expense of RMTs and legit players alike. He is jailed, and he unveils the solution to the problem, and now easily led people such as yourself view him as a martyr.
