Sadly Tanaka-san does not believe the Wii hardware would be able to cope with Final Fantasy XI, which was sad to hear since the game has already appeared on the far inferior PlayStation 2. When pressed on this matter, it was revealed that the problem lies more with Nintendo’s current online stance – not wanting people to interact online without the aid of Friends Codes. However, the key point to mention is that Square Enix is currently in talks with Nintendo about resolving this point of contention!

Confusing how they say that the problem is the Wii's hardware coping with ffxi, and then in the same paragraph they say the problem is Nintendo's concept for online play.

I don't know whats the deal with the online concept, but its because Wii's base memory is pretty shit, 512mb ;/. If they make a HDD like they did with PS2 they might be able to make it work if there are no other problems. Plus, unlike PS2, the Wii REALLY needs a HDD.

I don't get why every time a new console comes along, people expect it to play FFXI...

You got it on the PC, the PS2, and the 360... why do you need it on the Wii as well? If anything, SE is ripping people off by getting them to buy the same thing in different versions.

Yeah, I really can't imagine FFXI existing on the Wii simply because of the memory issue. In the far out chance that Nintendo did release some kind of memory add on it would probably inherit the problems most peripherals have. Limited customers, limited usefulness, and simply the fact it's not neccessary to own for most things would immediately make it niche (hello PS2 HDD).

They may say 'hardware limitations' but I'm reading 'marketplace limitations.' Wii is not a console being marketed at gamers who throw weeks at a time at gaming.

This is also kind of a joke. As if somehow the Xbox Live integration was a match made in heaven. PlayOnline is a failed system and Nintendo knows it.
