I don't see why anyone would be surprised by this. People don't buy a Wii to play FFXI again. They buy it for new gaming experiences. That's not to say that an MMORPG on the Wii is impossible, but it would have to be designed around the Wii's controller and tiny internal storage. Any MMO would essentially have to run entirely off of whatever content is on the dvd, like PSO. Nintendo isn't really aiming for the hardcore online gamer anyway.

So releasing FFXI on the Wii doesn't make sense for a whole bunch of reasons. And as we all know, SE people don't usually say what they're really thinking either. The friend code limitation is another classic SE excuse that has nothing to do with anything. Technically, it would be quite easy to tie a friend code to a POL ID. More likely reasons for no-FFXI-for-Wii: SE internal politics; the development resources are better spent on other projects; the Wii internal storage isn't suited for FFXI at all; SE just doesn't want to do it; or Nintendo doesn't want MMOs, or FFXI in particular, on the Wii.

I don't know whats the deal with the online concept, but its because Wii's base memory is pretty shit, 512mb ;/. If they make a HDD like they did with PS2 they might be able to make it work if there are no other problems. Plus, unlike PS2, the Wii REALLY needs a HDD.

512 sucks, but it doesnt matter, if it comes down to it, they can just use expandable storage. None the less, they still wouldnt be able to hold the FFXI install + everything else on an SD card; they would need atleast 10GB. I think putting FFXI is a dumb idea, but if they wanna go ahead and make a external HD like the PS2, whatever, I dont think it's worth it.

Somehow I don't think theres a slew of new gamers racing to play FFXI.

The thing he was commenting on, about Nintendo's online policy, is that their friend code system is designed to completely prevent child predators from stalking children.

I think the point is that Nintendo doesn't want anyone to be able to communicate with a random person inside a virtual world. Its a really stupid online policy though, but w/e.
