    1. Install Playonline from the original Van'diel Collection DVD.
This works with the old CDs too, right?

    2. Copy a previously updated Playonline folder and replace the existing install.
    3. Delete the Patch.bak file
Where is Patch.bak, and do I need to copy the ENTIRE contents of the Playonline folder? That's like 7.8 GB... Or just the Playonline Viewer folder (which is like 330 MB).

    4. Run Playonline and it will check all files and then reload.
    5. Install FFXI + ROZ + COP from the Original Vana'diel Collection DVD.
    6. Install TOAU from it's DVD.
Can I skip COP to save time? (kidding, kidding)

I installed POL from the Vana'Diel Collection, copied the PlayOnline Viewer Folder over to my new PC, and deleted Patch.bak

If I try to run POL.exe to update, I get an error message saying: Cannot move version update files.

Anyone able to help with this?

when u copy over the pol folder copy everything EXCEPT the usr folder keep the 1 from the install for some reason using usr folder from anouther install makes all sorts of weird shit happen

i had your prob after a few trys it just worked then i couldent edit pol like adding more accounts to main menu and alot more stuff happened all worked fine after i reinstalled and copyed over without the usr folder

vista is heavy on the ram it idles at 55% with 1gig i suggest only using vista 2-3gigs if u wanna play the newer games like fear i cant even run it on 1 gig lags so bad even on lowest settings on xp i could run it on high easly with no lag at all well no lag ingame at least loading kinda takes a while but worth it love that game

I'm also having problems getting FFXI Config to run in Vista. The url in the second quote really only tells you how to increase your resolution then prompts you to use the FFXI Config tool for the rest of your tweaks.

So that leads me back to Kamiboi's question, has anyone had any luck getting the FFXI Config tool to run in Vista?

Potentially Noteworthy: I'm also running it in SP 2 mode and as Admin, however, every time I open the program it closes within 0.5 and 1 second of opening. I've gotten the EU tool to run "properly" but it never saves the settings after closing.

I'm having the same problem on my new laptop. I installed FFXI, copied the ENTIRE Playonline (7.67GB) folder over, overwrote the files it asked me to overwrite, deleted patch.bak and got into playonline. Once I got in, the Install game icon isn't in PlayOnline and I can't actually get into the game. What did you do to fix this problem? I've been trying to get this fixed for hours and hours now, and I can't figure it out. Thanks for the help!

no u start off with copying over ONLY the pol folder leave FFXI 7gig folder for later

u copy everything EXCEPT the USR folder over the newest version of pol when u include the old usr folder it messes it up i have FF working perfectly right now

after u have pol working install FFXI NOT BEFOR!

then copy over the 7gig FFXI folder and delet the patch.bak

gatta do it all in order for it to work correctly cant just skip ahead and hope for the best

takes 10mins to get it installed my way

k.. gonna try this again but let me make sure I have the steps right, and in order.

    1) Install Playonline Viewer from Disc (I have Vana'collection DVD version)
    2) Copy over ONLY "PlayOnlineViewer" folder, minus the USR folder.
    3) Open Playonline, make sure files for POL get updated, install FFXI (assuming Install button is actually there, this time)
    4) Re-copy entire PlayOnline folder including FFXI/Tetramaster/PlayOnlineViewer/usr (7.67GB)
    5) Delete patch.bak
    6) Open FFXI update and play?

Is that right, or am I still doing something incorrectly?

Update: I think I've got it now. I'm making progress that I wasn't making before, just by copying individual pol.exe file instead of entire folder. I'll post again when it finishes. Hopefully I'll get my laptop online yet!

Okay, here's where I am at right now. I just finished updating Playonline after I got it to open. Now when I go to the main Playonline screen, there is NO INSTALL button. It will not let me install the actual Final Fantasy XI game. I don't understand why, either. This time, the only file that I copied was the pol.exe file, just to get Playonline to open.

I am at a loss here, because I know what I need to do to proceed, but I can't because the button for it is simply not there.

If it makes a difference, system specs are:
    AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-40 2.2GHZ
    Memory (RAM): 2047 MB
    Sytem Type: 32-bit operating system
    NVidia GeForce GO 7900 GS
Windows Vista Ultimate w/ media center and TV tuner

    New update:

I got Final Fantasy XI installed and working, sort of. After I got playonline working, I knew that FFXI would work if I could just get it installed. The problem is the lack of the install button. I digged up the old 4 disc FFXI/ROZ set that I had from ages ago though, and I was able to auto-run the install. So I got FFXI and ROZ installed fine, and I'm pretty sure that I can also get ToAU installed, but CoP is going to present a problem.

So before I go to the trouble of downloading the FFXI updates for a non-CoP updated game, I'm going to completely uninstall, and install the actual POL viewer from the original set of CD's. If that works for POL, and the Install Software button is there, then I can use the Vana'diel Collection DVD to install FFXI,ROZ,CoP and the ToAU disc to install it.

Overall this has been an EXTREMELY frustrating process for me, but I feel like I'm making positive progress and should be installed and running soon.
