FFXI was my first MMORPG ever. (75% will be the only 1)

I played it on the lolPS2 (yes even with its limitations)

I think it was Daahan (guessing?) who said maybe FFXI is really a beta test game, and all the data collected will be used for the real game, another new SE MMORPG

I played for almost 2.5 years, game was awesome in the begining, but after awhile it lost all it's flavor

I'm hoping SE mirrors alot of Blizzards way of communicating with there online community.

1 thing I have realized you will never satisfy everyone that play any MMORPG, there always going to be a few that will find faults with it

Stop. It's going to bring up a debate of WOW vs. FFXI. I doubt FFXI is going to take the solo path like you can in WOW (grind to lv70 solo). I would just like SE to make a more stable FFXI and fix the flaws in it. If they did that, XI would be a win, but it's much to late for that.

My biggest concern is if it is released on PS3 and XBox360 (like the aritcle said), wouldn't there still be limitations?

I'll play it, but the first signs of RMT being ignored completely I will uninstall then and there. I can tolerate one game full of bullshit considering when it came and I had lots of 75s/good gear I'm not planning on letting go of, but it'll be much easier to quit in the new game when Asbvlzkh mpks/bots when I am only lvl20.

SE would have to overhaul the new place, I think xp zones would be the same, NMs would have to be popped unless SE is on crack, same with end game zones being instanced.

Somewhat. Thats assuming Sony and M$ don't release higher capacity hard drives for the console in which case we'll be stuck with what we have now: reskinned armors, weapons, mobs. Sup red crawlers.

Personally, I'd like to see a next-generation FF Online game. I mean, the development team has had what, nearly 4 years to see what works and what doesn't, and to work the various kinks out. Granted their efforts at times have been less then stellar, but I would think that after all these years they can finally start getting it right.

Here's the issue. In FFXI you get to endgame and then you spend 50-100 hrs worth of game time to get one piece of gear. If you're aiming for a Ridill multiple that a few times. I'm thinking in the future I'd prefer to play a game where I can actually get all of the gear for a reasonable amount of time investment.

Is it honestly more fun for you because you have to sit in Aery 20ish hours a week for a small chance at a piece of gear? I'd think it would be more fun (read: not frustrating) to do something that has definite rewards.

Some of the best gear in FFXI is really awesome and you really feel accomplished for getting it. However, is it automatically fun because it took longer to get? SE makes people play longer with time sinks rather than content. They add stuff like Salvage gear and then lol at us because it'll take such an inordinant amount of time to get full sets.
    This person gets it.

I don't really want to do the "WoW vs FFXI" thing either, since when I played FFXI and read the debates my mind instantly rejected them as invalid and evil just like 90% of you guys are doing right now.

When I read this announcement I was excited at first since I love FF and would be really tempted to try out a new mmorpg based on the next-gen consoles. Only problem is that it still is SE, and they never "got it"

You'll be hard pressed in WoW to find someone that's spent "reasonable time" to get an item and hasn't got it. The only exclusion is probably Thunderfury, which is WoW's Ridill except it's for tanking...and just as overpowered.

I know people that have ground BRD, NIN, or RNG (back in the day, and maybe again) to 75 in like 10 days. The only difference in WoW is there are no princess jobs so EVERY job can do this. There is no loldrg, period (the closest job to this would be warrior.) Not even WHM's (priests) can be primadonnas because they can be replaced by druids and paladins.

I don't know...I used to think it was "pimp" that I had Duelist's Chapeau, but all it meant was that we just got lucky and had done xarc for like 5 months before seeing our FIRST ONE, not because we were "good" since it was looooong on farm by that time. In retrospect, it shouldn't add to your sense of accomplishment just because something is artificially difficult to obtain.

SE got much better with instancing when ToAU came out, and I honestly wonder if they will continue that. Do you guys think they "got it"? Think they'll add any people to the mmorpg team and not just have 1-2 devs working on new content?

WoW and FFXI are similar in some ways, but different in many others. WoW doesn't put all the artificial speedbumps in the way, and money is plentiful as hell without being inflated (constant repair bills make this a guarantee).

So you say you can "reach endgame" in 2 weeks. That's like reaching Roc and Simurgh in FFXI, is that endgame to you? I played endgame for 4 solid months and never even saw BWL, which is like....dynamis windurst. With glacier, xarc, and an entire different dynamis system behind it. BG didn't even really "finish" endgame before the expansion came out, and they were by far the best on Azshara.

If you have a group of 20-30 people that do NOTHING but play mmorpgs then you're going to tear through any game out there, period. There's no way around that. If you're expecting someone to build a game that can't be finished by 40 teenagers and 50 gallons of Amp in a couple months you're nuts. Your core members would all be using mommy's credit card and jobless, not exactly a "steady" stream of income.

Anyways, sorry to get on the WoW tangent more than I wanted to...my post is more of a "this is what a mmorpg should have been" than a flame on FFXI...which I obviously loved and played faithfully for 3+ years.

Not indicating anything playwise Mikedee, moreso just the community overall part. (btw this Crot, I know what will happen if I start a WOW/FFXI fiasco)

Like have split servers some NA, EU, JP, some mixed
Have different location for techinical/in-game help for each region
    (NA, EU, and JP)
    Be supportive of players suggestions
Show players that they listen, and do want to strive to give the best at what they do (I Know it sounds stupid, but people like when a company is loyal to it's fans)

If they can work on that I'll join the new MMO for a few months, to check it out, but if they keep repeating what they did FFXI, over the way it has been, they will lose me very quick

I really don't like that argument because it implies that Square only cares about money.

Thats simply not true. If you cared about money, you wouldn't constantly put out shitty updates and expansions in an effort to lose your playerbase.

If the bottomline really was money, they'd be mimicing WoW completely, in an effort to come anywhere close to its 8 million subscribers, instead of the 500,000 they currently have.

No, its not about the money. Square just doesn't get it. Another MMO is t3h fail.

Without a doubt, but as long as you can get the core of the game right I think you're fine.

What would most people agree is a reasonable medium?
    -- Fun to play
-- No visible RMT (since it's not going away, but if it doesn't get in my way I'm fine)
    -- Progessive
-- Instanced, or at least some way to let me do what I what, when I want
-- No "camping" of any kind, ever

Camping was non-existant in WoW, but has come back to an extent in the expansion due to the sheer number of people doing quests at the same time. It's actually quite frustrating to relive the experience.

if they made another one i would hope it wouldnt be same servers for en/jp again. make some servers mixed maybe so you have the option of playing with friends if needbe, but dont auto make them mixed.

    I agree.

You should reward the people w/ no lives outside of the game by not giving them constant competiton at any hour of the day.

Just wanted to add to Raineer's post, the one thing that I think keeps WoW's economy well-balanced is the fact that any item you can equip is either bound to you when you first get it (i.e. unsellable quest rewards) or binds to you when you first equip it. So you can't just buy your level 20 gear, use it to 25, then resell it on the AH. Once a person equips a piece of gear, it's gone from the economy forever, and the only way to get rid of it is to NPC it. So there's a constant refreshing of the economy due to the fact that every item leaves it as soon as it's used. There's no buildup of 50,000 O-kote or 900 osodes or a billion cock charms.

You also get some cash back from NPCing stuff, but that's offset somewhat by repair costs, which add up to quite a bit if you do anything major at 50+.

You mean you'd pay to have them return to being absolutely shitty?

A 360 would be improving then going back into the gutter... try 180 next time. Think before you post.

There is certain aspects of ffxi that they did really well. There are others that they fucked up horribly. For anyone here that thinks a game where 5 kraken drks can obliterate an hnm in under 2 minutes is well designed, you need to stop smoking crack. I dont get why they refuse to adjust so much shit in ffxi b/c they say it will endanger game balance yet you can do things like that.
I doubt SE puts out a new mmo but if they do, alot of people regardless of what they will say will be playing from day 1, just in case its like the last one and being there first will give you a definite edge. Personally I think they will keep adjusting ffxi at a snails pace keeping people playing, then after they get a bit more idea of what they are doing, they might tackle a new mmo in about 2 years or so.
There are certain features ffxi brought to the table that people will not want to lose, like changing jobs. Personally I hope that if they did make a new mmo you can still change jobs but no sub jobs at all. Sub job is one of the things in ffxi that makes it extremely hard for them to keep shit balanced and also a reason that we have merits and not a raise in the level cap. 1 of the nice things about leveling multiple classes on one character is that whatever you do in the game, you are always recogizable to friends instantly.
So, in all honesty I think id go the LW route, but id be looking closely for a lot more improvement. There are many areas that ffxi failed. More goal oriented gameplay with more balanced rewards as you play would be a key thing id look for. That will be a sign to me from day 1 that endgame may just be worth it. Though I have a strange feeling Id level to max on the new ff and then discover shortly after that they are up to their same old shit.

there were some things i loved about wow, such as varying stats and the suffix armors, so that you could wear a green and not be completely gimp. but the game itself, especially the graphics, just couldnt keep things to do that werent too repetitive and continued to be fun.

1 thing I wondered is ther 2 parts to SE?
(Meaning a SE JP and a SE NA?)

FFXI was built more for Japan's grind/mentality than it was for the NA/EU grind/mentality

I mean I have seen the JP ONRY, Serious Business! from teh get go and the game was built upon that

To most NA FFXI was more of a buddy list game
You make friends from different parts of the world and go enjoy the game, but SE never adjusted to other regions and kept the stale mentality "That it's working in JP so it will work anywhere"

I thank FFXI alot for making me meet people from diffrent areas, and getting to know them, but in the long run the game almost felt like a job than did it as a game

FFXI was my very first MMO and so comming into it i had absolutely no idea wtf i was gonna get into... i mean i followed the news years up to its release and watched closely for any information regarding it, but beyond being able to play online with people around the world.. i didnt know what it was gonna be like...

anyways.. my question for those people who've had many experiences with MMOs... could you please describe what your perfect MMO would be like if you could create one? It seems all mmo's will have one problem or another, and i think its due to the nature of the genre, not specifically the game, but i dont really know...
