anyways.. my question for those people who've had many experiences with MMOs... could you please describe what your perfect MMO would be like if you could create one? It seems all mmo's will have one problem or another, and i think its due to the nature of the genre, not specifically the game, but i dont really know...
The WoW TBC expansion is the best thing I've ever played. They really didnt do anything wrong. To top it off your road to max level ends up with a mount that flies (in outlands area only) and content based on having fun and along the way, you get keyed and get access to new raid content. There is plenty of shit to do, anyone who says there isnt anything to do in WoW must have hit 60, got bored of grinding AV or something like that, and quit. The new pvp system is a huge improvement over the old one. Everything is a reaction to players complaints about different issues.

P.S. To anyone who says WoW graphics suck, go buy a new video card. WoW graphics scale to your system unlike ffxi. The textures and light are amazing, the style comes from the series of games WoW is based on and wouldnt make sense if they changed it.

    realistic graphics - ffxi
quests with decent rewards - wow
armor options with stats, not just def for 2nd class armors - wow
no zone load time - wow
    jumping - wow
    rare spawns/nms - ffxi
    no rmt - no game
    solo/group mixture - in between ffxi/wow
stat points on lvl up - diablo 2 :D
instanced and non-instanced content - make the non-instanced gear better, but only slightly
never be afraid to outdate old gear! big ffxi problem.
claiming monsters - ffxi, hate games that you tag and other ppl can still hit.

theres prolly some im missing, there is a lot of things to pull from wow, some from ffxi, i couldnt think of anything i liked in any other game that those 2 didnt have a way of describing.

edit: wow graphics suck because of the style, they are well done, but cartoon = no thanks.

I meant that more as "we're still paying SE for stuff we complain about". They release new stuff > sometimes it doesn't live up to the hype > we complain > but we still play. Thats the way it goes every update without fail. Something they're doing is keeping us from deactivating our accounts. Or in some cases reactivating. It's not about the money as you said.

Agreed. Could level a character on WoW with decent equips without ever looking at the AH. In FFXI all your decent gears will be coming from the AH or some ridiculous camp because you just spent an hour doing some quest for a Scale mail.

hope. at least that's what it was for me, that and I didn't want to really leave my friends, that's why even after i stopped playing i was still paying for the game so i could log on and chat.

To be honest I thought WoW graphics were god-awful when I played FFXI, and it delayed me moving to the game for like 6 months.

It's totally different (to me) when you're actually in the game and not just looking at screenshots. FFXI's lagging issues affected me more than anything. My PC is awesome, but somehow I have to turn down my graphics just because 200 people are in Aery?

"Epic" is somehow a fitting and ironic way to describe wow's graphics. Pixel-by-pixel it might not compare to the detail, but the zones are SOOO much more impressive. Remember that feeling when you first got to Tavnazia and walked east across the bridge into Lufaise? That was one of my first HOLY SHIT OMG moments in ffxi, that's the most beautiful place in the game to me. Well, like 90% of WoW is like that.

It doesn't seem cartoony during play, and not having every single crab and crawler having the same skin for 75 levels is a plus as well. Every 5 levels or so you have a completely new enemy, it's not just the same 7 types of mobs repeated ad nausem.

Well obviously you have so much to do in FFXI, i mean that's 10 more jobs you need to get to 75.

I'm not sure how I feel about this topic.

SE got some things right and some things wrong, unfortunately the things they got wrong are such a hindrance that it's frustrating for the people who are still "trying" to play. The biggest issue with this game is the reliance of gil. The economy wasn't well thought out like someone mentioned--items and gil just keep adding up and adding up.. if it wasn't for RMT getting banned we'd still have hundreds of billions of gil still in the economy. If it wasn't for bannings (although to a lesser degree) we'd have a ton of "extra" gear sitting around. How many non-ex drops can the game support? Of course, the way RMT functions in FFXI completely destroys some aspects of the game. I didn't used to mind camping--spending an hour or two to see a fancy item isn't always bad--but there are far too many of these and of course stupid repop/droprates/rmt/competition/etc making people not want to do it at all.

I'd say the other major issue is lack of progression. Merits are nice, 'new gear' is nice, but for what? To me honestly it's like 10% physical improvement 90% e-peen and glory. There's nothing left in this game to be killed, and nothing new introduces a challenge that takes more than a week to figure out--with the exception of breaking AV and more artificial difficulty (Salvage), difficulty is measured by time, not strategy. Not to say anyone can do anything in the game, but if you can do one you can do 'em all. When I first started the game was still "fresh". Kirin was *hard*, Vrtra was impossible, and JoL didn't exist.

Lastly it goes without saying that while it's got amazing benefits, the fact that hardly anything in this game can be done by yourself. You can't even explore without major consequences if you die.

I feel the ONLY thing that keeps this game going is it's *strong* community. With no community who the fuck would care if you have a Ridill? The sense of "accomplishment" (which is just time or luck 90% of the time) keeps people around. When I first started I recommended all my friends to play. My ex is stuck at level 20 because she's into solo play (no jokes). My friend quit at 75BLM because his real life demands don't give him that precious time for an HNMLS and besieged and exping only kept his interest for so long.

I honestly don't recommend the game to my friends anymore because I feel it's such a terrible game and they're not going to get anywhere with the time they have to invest. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for me, I know that if my linkshell dissolved for one reason or another, I'd have no problem quitting.

Anyway back on topic, would I play another SE MMO? I'd give it a shot, but I'm in the same boat as Wafik in terms of staying.

God what a long boring post, I needed to kill time at work though.

What I'm interested in knowing is if many people would quit FFXI or any other MMO to join in a second Square-Enix MMO.

With all that bullshit they been throwing around I dunno...

but I think I'd quit and join the second one just to see what it is. I wouldn't even think aboot it if it's cheaper to play.

SE would have to overhaul the new place, I think xp zones would be the same, NMs would have to be popped unless SE is on crack, same with end game zones being instanced.
Wafik I think Asura has jaded you completely... RMT no doubt make the game less pleasurable than it could potentially be, but it's by no means a reason to completely uninstall a game. I've known for quite some time now that I'll never get a pair of B. Haidate which is pretty bad considering Warrior is my main job. But, that doesn't mean I'll quit. There's still plenty of content in this game that RMT can't touch that I find fun.

To everyone else that bashed FFXI... Obviously there's something that keeps you logging on each day. Maybe it's the entice of occasionally attacking 2-3 times, or friends, or whatever. The reason I log on is a culmination of pretty much everything. I have good friends in my LS, a strong desire to obtain the best gear, and most importantly, I love the world, the music, the story, etc. It is true that those in charge of game mechanics, like Ulli spawn times, RMT countermeasures, etc. don't know what they're doing, but the designers do. Simply put (warning, this is gonna sound really fucking nerdy), I love Vana'diel. So, there are a bunch of reasons I log on each day, but the main reasons are friends and the world itself. I think a lot of people have whored themselves out to get the best gear and lost sight of what really makes the game fun. That isn't to say I don't like pimping out my WAR, but it's a secondary concern of mine. I guess it's a personal issue, but meh.

The rumor said PS3,Xbox360,PC will get the new FFMMORPG

PS3 has a 20/60 gig HDD (which are upgradable)
360 has 20GB HDD (rumor of a 120GB with the new 360, code named "Zephyr")
PC has just went to Vista and MS will open up DirectX10

So it can be done, just hoping theres a level playing field when it comes for all 3 systems (like Windower/TP Party/Other stuff you get can only on PC, be given to all 3 platforms, and not make 1 special over the others)

I'm pretty sure I will at least try the second one, and just like Wafik said as soon as I level with a Ajashdgjkashdg I'm logging out for good.

Fun is fun, and I'd start with pretty much a clean slate. If I enjoy it and it's worth my time/money, then it'd be a success.

Successfully playing MMORPG's is all about being able to quit your first one, after you've done that you're fine. Until you've quit one you will go through GREAT lengths to rationalize each one with bullshit excuses like "even though the game sucks I know some internet friends so I stay here". If they were truly your friends then you'd be able to migrate to somewhere else where you might enjoy things more.

It's okay to get things wrong. Maybe SE doesn't realize that. It's better to make 2 mistakes and 8 good things in a MMORPG than it is to do nothing. Mistakes can usually be fixed, having no players because you have no content can't.

Homer: From now on, there are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way.
Bart: Isn't that just the wrong way?
    Homer: Yeah, but faster.

Even if they're not perfect, they should do their not perfect, but faster.

Theres gonna be RMT in any MMO no matter what. The only thing developers can do is try to make it so that their content isn't too crippled by the effects of said RMT.

With all its faults and lil annoyances, I still love FFXI. I can't say that I don't. I've been dabbling in WoW when FFXI starts to grate on me. It's got its fun points as well. In my mind, I couldn't compare the two to save my life really. They are different, very different to me. WoW is easier to put down, and sometimes that's a very nice thing. I consider it more of a diversion, and it will -never- replace FFXI to me.

Would I play a different FF Online? I could say "nowai!" but I'm not believing it.

Not enough/diverse enough content frankly. Salvage still needs to be picked apart and it holds potential but it's either spend 6 months figuring it out or spend 6 months trying to snipe a nidhogg for what you want (and this is -one- piece we're talking about atm). It's a toss up really, one is not essentially better than the other. This is ignoring the fact that they made instanced popped NM's that can actually not show up after you handle the pre-requisites to make the opportunity show up in the first place... wtf is that.

I made the switch from FFXI to WoW, so I'll try not to be biased and bring up WoW stuff...but if SE wants to make another MMO they need to:

-Not let RMT be able to gridlock ANY endgame activities from the monopolizing it.

-Not force people to group. In their next MMO they should let people solo, but reward people to give them an incentive to group and not cripple a persons progress just for this sole purpose. And to add to this, let any type of group WORK and not assfuck a group of people for ONE person (waiting for 1-3+ hours for a refresh/tank/etc is just dumb, sure have it so certain groups work better than others, but don't cockblock a group of people that just want to go out and kill shit, HNMs and other endgame stuff does not need this rule, just regular exp)

-NMs/HNMs, who really likes to camp 1-3 hours for a "possible" claim? Either instance it (like salvage or bcnm) or have it at a 15-45 min respawn (if that)

-NPCs need to have something that you'd actually use (subligars and medicine aside, when have you used an FFXI npc for something other than to talk and retrieve an item? I've only bought stuff from an npc for level 1 and level 7 gear and thats it)

-Not recycle their mobs. So you like that crab you seen in the dunes right? Well don't worry you'll see plenty more after that. Also if you can kill these:

    http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/images/mo...est%20hare.jpg

    At level one then these

SHOULD NOT FUCKING KILL YOU AT 75 OR BE ENDGAME CONTENT/XP MOBS
