Sure FFVII was a great game, and a groundbreaking rpg (this is not opinion, it is fact), but all the fanboyism is a little over the top. I think after people played this, myself included, it got them into the rpg genre, and then I went and played FFIV and realized what a true FF masterpiece can be, then I played 9 and 6, etc etc.
I think Square's intent was to do just that. Make the rpg genre more mainstream, and I think that they definitely achieved that.

My first was FF2 on the SNES (FF4, I know) and 7 was still my favorite. It's just a great story, had great mystery, there was tons to do, and they had the best villain I can think of in any video game franchise.

    If anything, Kefka > Sephiroth.

And Kuja's the best villian IMO after finishing replaying through IX.

Well, Sephiroth is the best only in my opinion...hell, when I played FFXI online I met a guy who gave that name as his child's middle name. No joke.

Wasn't there someone who named their baby Sephiroth? I used to have the link, showed the baby's face and the name registration with Sephy's music in the background heh.

I think after I played this, I realized that my first RPG was Dragon Warrior on the NES. Followed by going to my local video rental place every weekend and begging my mom to rent Final Fantasy on NES so I could continue playing my file on it. After a while the store sold it to me. I was ecstatic. Flash forward years into the future and I played FFVI and then IV on SNES. Years later I finally bought a PS1 and played FFIX, then VIII, and finally VII. And I really didn't understand what all the hype was about with VII and VIII. VII reminded me a lot of VI, particularly in the way Materia teaches you magic just like Magicite did. They were pretty similar, but VI still did it better. The characters had deeper stories behind them, more real character development, and the entire game didn't bank on just one hero and one villain.

Now that I think about it, VII is ALL about Cloud and Sephiroth and to a TINY lesser extent, Tifa. Were any of those other characters interesting at ALL? Fuck no. :/

Kefka has always been my favorite, but you have to respect the level of bad ass that Rubicant radiates. I mean the guy fills up your hp and mp before engaging you. I don't think any other FF villian does that.

Good point, I totally forgot about that part... Valvalis was pretty cool too (the wind guy).
