I don't think they hate it, but more like not know about it... it seems really underrated and it doesn't get the fame that it deserves, because it really is the best PSX FF IMO.

I think most of the people who are really into FF were introduced through FFVII. Not that VII was a bad game, but between what SE did with VII and VIII, when they decided to emphasize the roots of the FF series with IX it was a pretty big departure from what really had initially pulled in so many of the US playerbase.

I suppose... even though the "crystal" storyline didn't take effect in FF9 until the very very end.

And I was introduced via FF8, went back to 7, then 9 came out right after that.... I haven't played the original FFs until recently.

It was meant to be that way though. They had made it clear FFIX was like a "return to the crystals" or whatever, they wanted to get back to the FF roots.

I played through FF9 like 5 times, and always assumed the narration at the end was dagger... why would vivi die? doesn't really make any sense to me unless i'm missing something...i assumed it wasn't THAT long after the events of the Iifa Tree that they have the show at alexandria. But it does make sense that he wasn't at the ending where zidane meets up with dagger, I guess I always sidestepped that thought beacause of all the vivis jumping around.
    More spoileriffic stuff.

    Vivi's Letter
"I always talked about you, Zidane. How you were a very special person to us, because you taught us all how important life is... You taught me that life doesn't last forever. That's why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest... Even if you say goodbye, you'll always be in our hearts. So, I know we're not alone anymore... Why I was born... How I wanted to live... Thanks for giving me time to think. To keep doing what you set your heart on...It's a very hard thing to do. We were all so courageous. What to do when I felt lonely... That was the only thing you couldn't teach me. But we need to figure out the answer for ourselves... I'm so happy I met everyone... I wish we could've gone on more adventures. But I guess we all have to say goodbye someday.

    Everyone... Thank you. Farewell.
My memories will be part of the sky..."
The last part of the letter is fairly obvious. Its definitely Vivi. As a black mage, he knew his time was short, and he knew he had already lasted longer than most. He realized he would be passing away soon, and it looks like he finally came to grips with it.

Overall, I think Vivi most identifies with Zidane because of how similar their origins are. The cutscene that shows the letter does show what happened to all the characters after the incident at Memoria, and while Vivi was touched by each person he spent time with in a certain way, Zidane influenced him in the same way, to each situation.

Yeah it does make sense... I guess I always assumed it was Dagger who wrote it because of how the rest of the ending plays out.

Thanks for that though, it completely changes my perspective of the ending heh.

That sure didn't last long, huh? The crystals made a big comeback in XI, but now that I see XIII it's back to Sci-fi AGAIN. I just think Final Fantasy is just that, a fantasy game. Square's sci-fi rpgs don't need to be called Final Fantasy, look at Xenogears and Chrono Trigger.

Oh and actually now I remember an old issue of I think Game Informer in which they published "The top 10 most overrated games of all time" and they bring up Final Fantasy IX, slamming it into the ground. Talking a bunch of crap about it, not cutting it any slack because "It's just not FFVII."

Then again, they also put ICO on that list. And a few others that made me go "WHAAAAAAT??!?!?!" which I can't remember anymore for the life of me. So clearly their writers have their heads FAR up their asses.

As much as I like Amano, if Nomura had had some input on the character designs of FFIX, the game would have appealed to many more people.

edit: Game Informer is shit. I still think Funcoland was just conning kids with their cheap subscription + buy a game plan back in the day.

To be honest, both of those games are in leagues of their own. Final Fantasy tends to have its own brand of mythology, and each game to an extent is based off of it. Classical summons, chocobos, moogles, crystals, all this stuff makes some sort of an appearance into each FF game. Conversely, the Chrono and Xeno series have their own little quirks that make them unique from other similar storytelling.

Now if you want something that should not have been called Final Fantasy, its "The Spirit Within".

Yeah, because everyone loves Nomura's emo hairness.

edit: now that I think about it, it's always Nomura's characters you see in yaoi fanfiction. I guess his style just lends itself to that. ie. Cloud fucking Sephiroth and Sora fucking Riku.

Which leads to game sales. I like Amano's art style better but going off which games have been received better, Nomura wins.

I think a lot of people also hated 9 cause the main character had a tail and looked like a monkey <_< I agree that did kinda annoy me at some times (mainly the cutscene in the roof in lindblum(sp? lol forgot) <.<) but usually I just forgot about it and ignored it, cause it didn't change how awesome the game was.

Also talking about cutscenes, the one with Bahamut in Alexandria was pretty awesome :3

That, and the one with Bahamut and Alexandria's Naval Army was pretty sweet too.

So um. . . back on topic.

I've been hearing rumors that there is more than just the Dragon's Den added to the GBA rerelease. I haven't seen anything of the sort but a few people were talking about it at my store today, anyone find any other dungeons?
