    Merit to un-obtained WS

Lv63 Sam with Lv5 GKT merit, putting pretty much every combat aspect of merit into sam, I thought meritting combat skill to obtain a WS faster than pre-set Job-Level was only limited to the Weapon SKills you've already obtained. Meaning, I can only obtain for example Rampage at Lv53 IF and only if I have already obtained that weaponskill with ranger or bst or any other job that have skilled my axe skill past 175. that being said I was pretty dissapointed in the assumption that I can't obtain Tachi: Gekko even with full Merit in GKT combat skill.

I skilled my GKT with nin to 220 to get Tachi: Jinpu and Yukikaze 2 levels earlier, but now that i've ding'd 63, to my surprise, I was able to access Gekko.... Obviously my assumption was false then about this Meritting to access WS at pre-set job lvl. Just wanna make sure, this applys to all job / ws (Quest WS not included). If someone can just confirm this would be great and would put my mind at ease.

That sounds about right. You can only access weaponskills that you've "learned", which requires your base skill to be at a certain level. Merits do not enhance base skill, they function similarly to equipment.

My assumption was I can only access ws i'ved already learned also, but obviously this isn't true since I am lv63 with base skill cap at 217 and have access to Tachi: Gekko. But I guess it either has been changed, or I just got the message wrong from before

You can access WSes you havent officially learned, however sometimes they dont show up the second you ding. Usually took a fight or 2 for them to show up for me.

You can't use merits to gain WSs that the job doesn't have access to.

iirc, pld with merits in dagger can get at least 230, which is evisceration, but can't use it.

You can use WSes early with both merits and equipment. For example, COR gets slugshot at 55 with gunbelt, whether you learned it on another job or not.

I had capped H2H merits before starting to lvl MNK, and I got all my WSes 2 lvls or so early(except Asuran of course). After getting the required adjusted skill though, I had to log or zone for it to appear in my WS listing, oddly enough. You don't get the "learned" message until your base skill reaches it though. If I look hard enough I can find the screenshot of me using Dragon Kick to learn Dragon Kick.

Nothing's changed, I lvled MNK over a year ago.

Similar thing happened with Slug Shot to a couple of COR I know, they had the required skill level but no option in the WS menu. It worked fine with a macro though.

If you zone or re-equip your weapon they should reappear. Have to force the game to recalculate your WS list.

I had two merits on Great Sword when I got Spinning Slash early. I dinged 64 (I think it was), and as soon as my Great Sword skill hit 225, I got the skill, even though my base was still too low.

On a very unrelated note, why the fuck does SE allow you to get the "learned" text even though you can't learn a weapon skill?!

I got the "Therin learns Hexa Strike!" message a while back, and, knowing perfectly well that PLD CAN'T use Hexa Strike, was forced into checking my menu for it anyway. Way to be a cock-tease, SE. >8O

It will say "XXXX learns weaponskill!" when your base skill reaches whatever level that weaponskill is, even if you have been using it for a couple levels because of merits.

Very soon after they put out merits, I increased dagger skill just for shits 'n giggles. The very next party on thf I got a GM called on me for hacking because I used VB at lvl 32 . Worst part is the GM believed them, until I was jailed and took the time to explain that there were something called "merits" in the game. /sigh

Too bad it only lasted for like an hour till I dinged 33 and nobody cared anymore . /wasted merit.

Now go level whm up and it won't say it cause you already learned it. You "know" it is what it really means.

Yea I assume they say that because "Your skill reached a level at which you could use Hexa Strike were you to have a job at the appropriate level with which to use the weapon skill. Congratulations." was probably too long for one line.

. . . Merits DO enhance base skill, gear does not.

Both gear and merits allow you to use weapon skills that are higher then your current skill sans the merits/items.

I used to use the Staff Belt to reach Staff WS 5 levels early

Always wondered though, if I could have started the WSNM quest at base skill + gear skill, but I never got to do that cause I leveled base skill over the requirement before starting it

I did this with Dagger. When I hit 57 (I think that was the level), I zoned in and out and had Dancing Edge on my WS list.

Before my hard drive crashed, I had a screenshot of myself learning Slug Shot from a skillup that happened when I used Slug Shot (as COR/RNG with Gun Belt, no merits). Sadlly, there are now No Pics, so it Didn't Happen. But yeah, I was able to equip/unequip the Gun Belt at 55 and watch the WS appear/disappear in my list.
