heh, i wanna see SE increase faffy and tiamat's sleep resist.
So many /DRK haters? lol
I don't get why it matters if you sub BRD or DRK, either way you're going to get hate and pretty much keep it the entire time. If you're not able to hold hate as a tank using one of those subs then you or the support/DDs must be doing something wrong... I've read of fights that have been tanked from start to finish using a single NIN/DRK, with the tank never losing hate (on mobs like Ouryu, Tiamat, etc). I've never done a complete fight solo myself as the last thing we're short on is tanks most of the time, but I definitely don't doubt it being possible. In fights without horrid roar me and the sub-tanks just about never lose hate.
Regardless, I prefer /DRK. /BRD is like the fool proof sub where you can be an idiot tank and still get hate over anyone else, and I just don't like the simplicity lol... I like the abilities/spells DRK provides much more. For instance, stun makes tanking easier on both you and the other tanks and can prevent MP loss in the case of stunning a TP attack or spell (happens like 3-4 times a Tiamat usually), Souleater doubles as both a method for cheap damage output and HP for co-tanks to cure for more hate, and so on.
Really it just comes down to preference, but I don't think it's accurate to try to compare them... The playstyle for those two subs are completely different.

/BRD has some uses, but if you need it to get hate on somthing like wyrms, find a new job.
And its a pretty simple solution to the sleep problem...dont use it. Its not needed, plenty of tools to use. Although once you get used to Tiamat, there really should never be a need to sleep her.

I addressed the horrid roar concern a sentence or two after that statement, and yeah... In those situations where the single tank held hate the entire time, there was no damage done when the Wyrm was on the ground so it'd never get TP. Each flight BLMs would go all out doing ~8-10k or so damage before it lands, and then rest when it was on the ground. We've never done that from start to finish, but other linkshells do, and in our playing around with the concept it was very effective.Originally Posted by RKenshin
think the only time i've ever used nin/brd and liked it was when solo tanking a mini-wyrm like ks99 or fafnir. we just don't keep enough people in aoe/song range for it to to be useful on most mobs(and i really hate the little delay you get after singing before you can take another action). really depends on your linkshells playstyle i guess.
Yeah, that's our general strat. Here's Kaeko's posts about it in his livejournal:Originally Posted by RKenshin

I talk about it in my blog too somewhere, but Kae goes into mechanics more, and mine is more chatty... plus I can't find it.
Tia lands after 9%/10k damage, or 2 mins, whichever is first. If you don't do damage on the ground, you don't get TP moves on the ground. We recently got a Roar right at the end of a fight with 2 tanks, but I think that was due perhaps to some Thunder spells hitting right after she lands, and perhaps use of Bio on the ground repeatedly (when I'm on Bio duty, I only cast in the air). Didn't really matter anyway, we had that second tank and she was down to 1% anyway, so we were just chain nuking to finish the fight at that point.
It's just a strat that works for us, we're largely a JP shell, so times that are compatible for both the NAs and JPs to get things on schedules like Tia are difficult, so we found something that works with lower numbers. If we needed to we could "hold" and damage much more slowly with a solo tank less experienced than our usuals.
