except when you run in to cast barwatera for no good reason and get owned by fluid spread
Have the bard do it, we're already up there getting owned and it doesn't ever do much. Might as well go with our weak ass version and keep the whm far away.

Or you could cast it before the mob has tp/arrives. >.>

Could cast barblindra too, which I hear is also effective against "water-based physical damage".

    Wing damage isn't wind based...
Nor is Fluid Spread water based.

It's more of a placebo effect.

No need, I already take 0 damage from water-based physical attacks.

Does spirits within work on it? I'm not familar with the jailers.

I always thought mijin worked like a breath attack; resistable with corresponding elemental resist, and damage lowered with direct magic dmg reduction gear, but unaffected by MDB.

It's better to have Horrid Roar take some useless barspell off than it is to take of Protect, Shell, or any other useful buff though.

Whilst it appears to be a physical attack, we tested this camping and during the Jelly Ring NM Fight.

Without Barwatera I was getting hit for 350+ with Fluid Spread and with it I was getting hit for 100 or so on my whm, the nin I was with also saw a massive reduction in damage when it was up.

So whether or not this is a physical attack, barwatera certainly makes a lot of difference

I'm led to believe that Fluid Spread is a physical AOE attack (judging solely on the fact that it can be evaded), and as such has no magical properties
magic-based TP moves can be evaded as far I can remember. As for Fluid spread, I believe it is physical due to the fact that it can interrupt spells.

Spell interruption is a good way to test whether something is physical or not. I used to test this often, and found out I was right most of the time with the addition of BLU spells (1k needles is bizarre, it seems like it has its own rules, given it's listed as magical, can't interrupt spells, but is reduced by physical damage -% gear).

As for Mijin, I don't think MDB, barfire, or anything else has an effect on it. You'll notice in Dynamis for example, that people take relatively the same damage. You won't see some people "resist" while others take full damage, as if this were commonly the case, it would be clear that barfire is having some kind of effect.

-magic% (coral gear, eg) and -all% (defending ring, eg) reduce mijin damage. shell and mdb do not.

Interesting, how did you test this? It seems like it would be difficult considering the wildly varying damage.

The -all% is logical. The magic -% I would be interested in seeing the tests on, though that does seem to make sense too.

There are some NMs that, when they mijin at full health, will cause 4000 damage exactly.

You could also compare your damage to the guy next to you and account for partial resist fractions.

How would you make said mob mijin without damaging it?

    EDIT:

This is the way I was thinking, and probably the best way. I was just curious how Aurik tested it.

I think this is just a case of a blu spell being different from the mob version. Cactuar 1k needles is physical damage, blu 1k needles is magic.
