I'm sorry, they weren't even fuckin trying with the new ones.

You could kinda take that to imply that Qui-Gon (sp?) and Obi-Wan kinda went against the council after they said Anakin was not to become a Jedi, and decided they were going to do it regardless.

Maybe like, "Yoda thought he shouldn't be trained, I took it upon myself to train him anyway."

I see what you're saying I think (like if Yoda didn't believe he himself could do it, of course the coucil would refuse, but maybe obi would think he could do it better than yoda anyway) but if I remember right from ep1, Obi was on the side of the coucil.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm too lazy to go find the scene right now) but I think shorly before the battle with Darth Maul, Quaigon tells Obi that he's going to take Anakin as his paduwan learner-- which means (and he states) that he believes Obi is ready to become a true Jedi and that there's nothing more for him to teach him. Big IIRC here, while Obi is happy to hear this, I believe he points out that he doesn't think Quaigon should do it if the council disapproves-- which is why Quaigon made Obi promise as he (umm... spoiler? lol) died...

Now if I'm completely mistaken there and Obi didn't say he thought they should follow what the council decided, then yeah I can see where I would have been mistaken looking at it like you said. But I'm about 90% sure that the general premise and "point" was always that Quaigon was well known for going against the council's wishes, and that Obi-wan was a better Jedi in the end (and the same with Luke to Anakin) because he figured out at some point that being the epitome of a Jedi meant that your personal feelings could never rise above the pure end purpose of the greatest good; and that no single Jedi thinking alone could ever see it all perfectly.

Cheesy maybe, but meh you don't become a classic story without making some serious point about good over bad.

edit: Also I agree with OP, Empire had everything, we see that Han actually has a heart, we meet Yoda, Luke trains to actually become a jedi despite being far too old, we see that Luke's greatest fear is to become the next sith lord, and see him overcome the things that would lead him down that path, then find out that his father the jedi in fact is the epitome of the weakness that is the dark side. Yeah, the others all have their bright points but the whole story really rests in Empire. Maybe that's why Lucas hates it, maybe he thinks he did it wrong.

I was just trying to give him (George) a little credit, but I pretty much agree w/ you that the prequels gave very little thought to the original movies.

How come C3P0 has no idea who anybody is in the original movies? WELL BECAUSE WE JUST ERASED HIS MEMORY LOL.

My personal order, since everyone was else was giving theirs...

1. Empire
1A. Sith
3. Jedi
4. Clones
5. New Hope
6. Phantom

Justification:
1. Empire is awesome because the bad guys win, and the acting is good.
2. Sith is pretty good because the bad guys win, and the acti... Ewan McGregor is good. Also helping it = the movies before it were awful.
3. Jedi is the only other Star Wars that I can watch without twitching once. The Jabba the Hutt parts are fun. Space battle, also fun. Also, I want a speeder bike.
4. Clones. Love scenes, contrived. Plot, thick and dull. Last 40 minutes = better than most movies that will ever be made.
5. New Hope, hard to watch now. I've seen it 100 million times. Hamill is pretty annoying in it. Compared to Empire and Sith, there's no emotion.
6. Phantom. Yikes. Something nice to say... something nic... Oh yea. I did like the Duel of the Fates music and that whole battle with Darth Maul.

I remember reading a long time ago (so please don't ask me for the source now) in a Lucas interview that he said he chose Haydensen (sp) to play Anakin because he wanted someone to BE Anakin, not someone to PLAY Anakin in a movie. I believe that was his reason for choosing an uknown actor, rather than a famous, more talented one.
