It wouldn't have to be a MMO really. Something like battle.net (especially the free part) could succeed decently.
MMORPG, huge emphasis on character customization, a sophisticated Wii style character that lets you work with color pallets for any objects in your possession. Very detailed character profile that would go in detail about your characters background, combat history, job history, faction history, time played, rl details etc.
Different factions both PC & NPC controlled. I'm talking Death Corps style terror groups, religious groups stemmed off the Glabados Church, noble families, mercenary groups, poachers, treasure hunters, etc.
Player can only belong to one faction at a time and must wait 1 week after leaving a faction before joining a new one.
Monthly faction ranks dependant on a server wide poll of player points for the month. Overall points would come from a wide variety of statistics that would not be made known to players ahead of time. Top 5-10 ranks in a faction get hierarchy titles and bonuses in battlefields such as hirelings, family heirloom weapon, mounted knights, standard bearer that gives bonus to your party, bodyguards that don't leave your side, additional gil earned, higher quality treasures found.
Faction members could war each other and face off in arena style competition vs each other and set stakes such as gil, items, penalties for the losers faction etc. Or compete in quests specifically designed for members of that faction.
Random encounters that adjust difficulty according to the highest leveled member of your party. Map size that changes depending on party size. Lots and lots of randomized maps, so many maps that you'd never feel like you were playing the same one. Weather largely affecting overall performance of character and spells based on character's zodiac.
Victory conditions that change as often as the maps do, sometimes you'll be rescuing people, other times reaching a certain point on the map, slaughtering all enemies, killing only the leader, some quest encounters might require certain items or spells to be used. Some victory conditions would be secret and you'd have to figure them out on your own, or rewards/quest would differ depending on how you handle an encounter.
A NM or HNM system that would require either pure randomness for a rarer monster to show up, or certain conditions to be met on the battlefield such as reducing all mobs to less than 10% HP w/o killing them, certain weather being present, one of your party members being at so low HP. Certain items being equipped or a large amount of gil being carried might provoke a surprise ambush by a notorious bandit faction.
A GM team that take on the character form of Ivalice's Judges. There would be a monthly event where a team of Judges face off in a battlefield vs the top ranked members of each faction.
A wide array of gil sinks including, taxes, pickpockets, gate tolls, losing battlefields, etc.
Weapons & armor that lose potency over time if not repaired, some magical weapons & armor would not decay of course.
A weapon/armor/jewelry/clothing system that lets you customize for your own character. For example opposed to FFXI's system where they have a ton of useless crappy items that are mostly there because they're cheaper than some items. This system would let you order an item and depending on how many bonuses you want on it, that would set the time it takes to create, price of the item when its done, and possible rare ingredients needed to craft it.
Shops would have premade crap yes, but that would vary and be random, so sometimes you might find really good equip at a shop, sometimes really poor. Or you could just order an item and be like, I want a sword, it should be this color, this bonus, these runes/message/mark on the item, this style, this added effect, this durable etc.
So if you could just put a ton of gil into a suit of equip or jewelry set, or clothing set.
I'd have a character aging system so that doesn't make characters age really quickly, but aging would be there. It wouldn't be as quick as some of you may be thinking. I'd say after so much aging has taken effect the character received a permanent "retired" status, and in the event of a retired character you could only use him for say like 5 hours of combat a week. Obviously as you can see this and many other rules are just building block ideas, stuff I'd like to see, but obviously no idea what would work perfectly and what wouldn't.
You'd be allowed to make up to like 5 characters per server. No additional cost per character.
Gah I wrote too much I don't even feel like proofreading any of it. Just some random thoughts to be taken with a healthy heap of salt. None of what I just wrote is meant to be taken as is, more like inspirational insight into what I'm thinking of. Welcome to any fair criticism or additional ideas.
Gares will you make MMOs for me???
I require funding.
One thing I don't really like in MMORPG, guides. People that have done it before and say, oh this is the answer. I hit on a topic of where I'd like to have secret victory conditions that alter quest results or rewards. I think it'd be better for people to say, "hay guys wtf we gonna do about this situation?" Other than "LOL let me google this problem."
Here's another idea, alignment that changes based on things you do in battle or moral decisions you make during a quest. Certain factions require certain alignments, changing alignments can cause you to be expelled from a faction, so in theory each faction will have a coat of arms or guideline.
Also of course, it needs an arena that lets you pick a difficulty and offers you a surprise battle scene, or fight against other PCs, wagering, gambling system, possability of characters coming down with illnesses from certain weathers, traps, spells, which can effect their perforamnce in battle or age them more if not treated correctly.
New jobs too of course, but it wouldn't be so job specific, where, zomg we need a refresher type deal. It'd be alot more based on player's overall experience and potential other than JA imo.
I'd like to see things like playing around with terrain. High vantage points giving huge archer bonuses, casting lightning on submerged opponents for huge bonuses, burning down a few trees in your way.
Also lets give Geomancer a real roll. I'd like to see Geomancer able to alter terrain with spells. Throw a few trees in a charging enemy's path and put them on detour. Make a mountain come out of fucking nowhere, of course the potentcy of the spell would greatly vary on many factors. I like things when the outcome isn't always so clear. When after a battle you could sit back and be like whoa that was fucking crazy, didn't see any of that shit coming, did you see how we turned that around? No more of this, I equip my hackmaster +5, the world crumbles before my wrath. Good equip shouldn't make a player, it should make a good player better. Stuff that is really one sided isn't very fun.
Also lots of fodder hirelings/followers, like pawns in chest. Just there to build a body count really, or take a hit in place of a veteran adventurer. But maybe your followers could gain exp too and you could customize them. So although they're very fragile, if yours last awhile you might get to put a few bonuses on them.
IDK, I loved FFT and I think the Ivalice setting is one of the best out there. I like to think about the posabilities.
Pic not related.
