The difference here is that Taj is using his existing knowledge of FFXI's encryption to create exploits, something beyond the power of a script kiddy.

Fine, disregard my use of the term script kiddy, my point is simply that there will be other people who have the ability and/or knowledge to crack the encryption either now or at some point in the future. I have no doubts that Taj is a smart guy, however I also have no doubts that there are other smart guys out there who joyfully overstep the ethical line that Taj toys with.

I don't know why people are thinking this maintenence is because of Taj. They're doing hardware upgrades. It only takes 3~4 hours to patch and restart the servers if they were fixing something Taj did.

And as to Taj, has there been previous exploits found out by others that he's been able to reproduce and thus perhaps help to fix? Or are what he's finding close to being nearly too obscure for (m)any others to find?

I dunno, I guess I just wonder how many others are out there actively trying to find this stuff for their own/other's ends. Most hacks I've heard of that are, hm, "commercially" available seem to be more of a way to "enhance" one's own play, not out and out be a malicious attack on others. Or am I mistaken? I don't know much about it really.

That was exactly my point. There are always multiple people/groups seperately trying to exploit online community based apps, just because they can.

Worse, if it gets to the RMT community at the wrong time- well, IGE just filled all it's orders for the month, for the next year. It's infinitely better for the game in the long run to have something fixed after Taj makes merry with it, as opposed to months of anti-RMT work going down the shitter.

just did a /sea all with someone's name from my shell, it still says "Search result: Only one person found in the entire world."

then the best way to prove it would be to hit printscreen with the text you just typed in up, although that still doesn't really offer 100% proof, just gotta take taj's word for it.
