I'm too poor to be /rng I'm afraid.

Thanks. I assume at 60 I'll go back to /thf for SATA, so it's really just 50-59 I'm worried about.
I personally always -hated- /THF. Double Attack, Berserk, Defender are such great JA that I didn't want to lose them for SA and TA.

I'd suggest going /WAR all the way to 75.
please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not a melee so it's very plausible, but when subbing thf, isn't the only effect of SA to force the next hit to crit? from what i've read on the boards here, it seems like normal hits are pushing well and good into the crit range, making SA almost obsolete, assuming the nerf bat doesn't hit too hard when it comes. as such, there would be very little reason at all to sub thf on sam, even at the lower lvl range, since things like attack boost and berserk from /war would be so attractive.
I was an old school SAM, back when melee actually SCed and the like, SAM was sometimes expected to sub THF to close with Gekko. I personally stopped leveling SAM for a while because people expected me to sub THF and it just plain sucked. Apart from that, there are people who still actually sub thf for the bigger WS damage (They still don't understand DoT). Shit, I had a SAM who was subbing RNG, after the 2h update was spamming sidewinder on Mamool (Nyzul) with Scorpion Arrows . I think a lot of the time some people lack the ability to know when to sub what jobs.

Just go with /WAR, it's more DoT and personally I think one of if not the best subjobs for every melee class in FFXI. (Yes I know it's also a great main job)

I think sam/rng still has its place (it's just not on mamool at nyzul lol) although certainly not with scorpion arrows

but yeah, unless you actually need the hate control of /thf, sam/war will let you do more over time.

if it's just survivability, I'd probably go sam/nin over sam/thf anyway (esp. at 75 since you can't combine SA and overwhelm)

SAM/RNG is definitely a viable option for certain camps; but I think that was before the two handed change; I haven't played it in a while but I'd imagine that the recent update made it even better to use GKT over Archery.

yes and no, soboro is still wrank capped and still has a base damage of only 40.

assuming your r.acc is good enough then it just comes down to brass tacks between:
    52+75%~str * large_pdif * 1.75 vs 129+~16%str+~25%agi * smaller_pdif * 5.0

I suspect that's a close enough competition (especially if you have a piercing bonus) to make it an option in some places.

if you're using hagun it's a bit closer, since both will be wrank 8 it'll be:

    91+75%~str * m_pdif * 2.0 vs 129+~16%str+~25%agi * r_pdif * 5.0

which will mostly come down to whether .75str is enough to make up .16str+.25agi+38 and whether m_pdif is large enough compared to r_pdif to make up the 2.0 vs. 5.0 fTP.

I know some people are going to hate me for this, but can someone layman's terms the whole sea gorget deal (I hate trying to comprehend posts like the one above this when trying to find a conclusion for something)? I thought I had it down but then I revisited the the issue, and apparently they're only really worth it for single-hit WS (over PCC on multiple hit)? Would this mean all the time I spent on farming items for Breeze (Jin) and Flame (Asuran) was wasted? =(

Ok, this is my understanding on the matter. I have a good grasp of the math that is used (Its really quite simple), and I've had the conversation with Nagamaki (hes my LS leader ironically) and this is basically how it goes:

Single-hit WS: Gorget is going to win.

Lower-Number-Multi-Hit WS: Gorget is going to win if your ACC is decent at all. Examples of this would be with WS's such as Shark Bite. This also Happens with Jin, if say your using Sushi and keep a high ACC during WS. If your ACC isn't high in WS gear for example, PCC will end up showing better numbers.

High-Number Multi-hit WS: PCC Is going to win the majority of the time. By majority I mean any time your not fighting something that you have 95% ACC rate on in WS gear and your WS isn't more than say, 4 hits.

Thats basically how it works in short. If you go by number of hits, Gorget=1-2 (3+4 Sometimes) PCC=5+ hits.

Definitely yes, I've watched couple of non-gaiter BLMs and even one RDM soloing them during my last few colibri parties. Sleep and Gravity both seemed to work well. One pretty average-geared taru BLM was keeping the middle section clear of wivres while he was there.

Another urban legend Fact or Fiction? If your fomor hate gets high enough, they can aggro you through sneak. I've never seen it happen, I've heard of it happening, but never known anyone it's happened to personally. I think it's bull, as you need max Fomor hate to spawn the Swift Belt NM's, and they don't aggro through sneeak at that point.

perhaps that it is sneak on during yellow or red hp? Since that formor not only aggro by sound but also by hp.

    So...

I'm sure this is in the Handbook but what is the unit of measurement used in the R and S connectivity status? XD

Like Bagel said, I'm pretty sure they've fixed this.

I've personally had this happen to me during Light Weather (not sure of day). And it wasn't because I was closer than usual, it was walking/running in the same routes I usually run.

Example: Walking in the middle of Despot hall would get you aggro. When traveling island to island, I couldn't walk along the edge without getting aggro.

Note: This only applied to the Groundskeepers in the walls which are already sight aggro. Light Weather only seemed to enhance their aggro range.

Setting: Two BLMs duoing fafnir clone.

Plot: "I'm a DRG and I'm going to attack fafnir from behind while he binded"

    Moral: That DRG was stupid.

that's an easy choice, you can't use any of the other ones currently.

so unless you're about to level a ranger corsair or mage job get the melee ring, or wait.

    Re: Random Question Thread

Why do Samurais use Hachiman Kote+1? Like I know a few of the Sams that surf these forums do, Rukenshin, Richardd, ect. But I just don't see why you would take Kote+1 over Sune-ate.
    Stats run down:
    Kote+1 + Fumas = STR+5 Haste+3%
    Okote + Hachiman Feet = Atk+20 STR+2 OR Dusk + Hachiman Feet HAste+3% Atk+5 STR+2.
So why do Sams continually wear these?
