I think it's funny that every comedian you say that has stolen material I find incredibly funny. Such as the newest example, Robin Williams.

stealing jokes goes completely against comedy, if you give me a script of richard pryor, i could go into a club and make people laugh their asses off. Its not the person, its the material, if the material is good, it doesnt matter who tells it. Do you really think these hollywood actors are actually funny? Sure you see a romantic comedy with Hugh Grant or whatever, and you may laugh, but do you really think its him thats funny, or is it the situation and the dialogue created by the writers(material) thats funny? Sure the actor has to portray the humor, but if you strip the situation down completely, as in stand up, and you tell the actor to make an audience laugh, they will struggle.

Stealing jokes is hack at its finest, whether you laugh at it or not is not the question.

Are you saying that if you ask an actor to come up with his own comedy routine that he's gonna have a hard time with it? Cuz if so that's pretty obvious and adds nothing to your point.

On the other hand, if you're saying that just telling someone else's jokes, without regard to presentation, will not have the full effect, then you seem to be contradicting yourself.


One question I've always had though, is what differentiates stealing someone's jokes from two people coming up with the same joke independently? Take the fence one in the video for example. The Ari guy pointed out it was in the news, so what's to say the two of them didn't just come up with two versions of the same joke?

Regardless, Rogan is still an utterly unfunny, whiny cunt. He needs to go back to hosting his lame-ass reality TV shows and never try to be a comedian again.

Sorry to tell it like it is, but just "owning" one known joke-stealer doesn't make you a god, especially if you've never said a truly funny thing in your life. Rogan's a hack, has always been a hack, and always will be a hack. Sounds to me like he's mad that a stealing beaner tells his jokes better than he does.

p.s. It's incredibly hard to be original 24/7. Pretty much every joke is told by at least 2 people, whether it was developed independently or stolen. There are too many people telling jokes and too few things to laugh at to guarantee originality. Stealing regularly and making a career out of it is super lame (lookin' at you 'Los), but it's not the end of the world if it happens here and there, I highly doubt there's a comic alive who's come up with every single joke they tell on their own.

I want to know what possible copyright claim Mencia has to this video. It wasn't filmed or produced by him, he doesn't own the venue, he wasn't "performing" (either paid or unpaid), and the spliced-in clips of Mencia's act in other places fall under fair use.

It's coverage of the fallout from the KKKramer blowup. Damon Wayans was on the two nights later and in spite of the ban on using 'nigger' in his routine he used it 16 times, got fined and banned from Laugh Factory.

Never mind that the audience was laughing its ass off during his routine. The club owner just booted him over the word. Never mind the comedy, we're worried about people's feelings.

Wow, I just came across this thread. Can't believe I missed it since I've always disliked Mencia.

I do stand-up in NJ and NY and the people I've performed with work really hard on their sets. Stealing material is just the worrrrrrrrrrrst thing you could ever do. You can spend hours churning out crap jokes to throw at the crowd and go weeks till you find that gem of a punchline that kills. It's so great when that happens and to have it stolen and boost some hack to stardom is just too awful to describe.

It seems so simple for a lot of these big name guys to rattle off jokes but it comes from countless sets of trial and error.

It's good to see the truth being exposed and that faking who you are comes back to bite you in the ass. People may hate Dane Cook or Robin Williams but they are successful because they are honest and true to their personalities (however warped) and the audience responds to that. The don't fake an ethinicity to take advantage of minorities like Carlos and even though it's worked so far it appears it will be his downfall as well.

At least that's how I like to view the situation

fyi I know most comedians are thieves, Robin Williams was a joke thief, and I loved his stand up, same with Dane Cook, some people just tell jokes better than the writers... hell in that thing I just posted I think Mencia told it better for this generation, but I just think people need to give credit for what they use, if he'da said "and I got that from Bill Cosbey" or something to that extent I wouldnt hate him so much, but hes so fake

There's no way in hell Mencia improved on that joke. Bill Cosby had some of the best delivery and timing in the business, and he didn't need to spaz out during the punchline like a goddamn cartoon character to make the audience laugh.

I guess it's that 'HOLY SHIT THAT WAS THE PUNCHLINE AAAARAGAGH' spasming that makes me dislike comedians like Mencia and Dane Cook to begin with, the plaigarism just cements it.
