Yea im kinda confused here, do you guys want the US to be pro-active, since by your logic they have a responsability as a world power, and hence their "world policing" would be justified. Or are you saying America should butt out and leave the world to its affairs.

Im confused here, what do you Americans want to do? Or for that matter what does the rest of the world want the Americans to do? XD

Edit: In my opinion by saying the US is a world model and should handle all things in the world, you are expecting too much. They are a independent country, who will take almost all options to ensure their prosperity, to expect them to worry about the rest of the world, or for the rest of the world to presume they can just ride on America's back, is not only lazy, but downright counter productive. If you want your nation to have peace, and prosper, then you should TRY to make it better, not expect another country to do it for you.

Well, what I want to do is not mess with other countries. It seems like the world will hate us no matter what we do though, so it really doesn't matter.

If you had pretty much unlimited resources wouldn't you try to make the world a better place?

(The idea that you can not the fact that we may or may not be heading in that direction. XD)

Quote (of Bush) from that article:

This is a challenge that requires a 100% effort; ours, and the rest of the world's. The world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases is the People's Republic of China. Yet, China was entirely exempted from the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. India and Germany are among the top emitters. Yet, India was also exempt from Kyoto … America's unwillingness to embrace a flawed treaty should not be read by our friends and allies as any abdication of responsibility. To the contrary, my administration is committed to a leadership role on the issue of climate change … Our approach must be consistent with the long-term goal of stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere."
It's an easy thing to harp on, but really, if you start looking into it there are obvious reasons why some nations would be ambivalent.
yea i heard that argument before, but why not set a good example? why compare yourself with a developping nation like china? that's like saying Johnson & Johnson caused alot of pollution and got away with it, and that's why we should do it too. while the majority of the developped world are trying to reduce CO2 admission and improve the envoirnment, US is comparing itself to the bottom of the barrel when comes to environmental pollution track records.

Maybe if all countries shared the same amount of power, it would be easier to help eachother out and not seem like policing. But that will probably happen when pigs fly, because as long as one nation has the most power, other nations will distrust it and conflict will rear its ugly head.

Besides a strong nation helping a weak one does almost nothing for the weaker nation's development and only makes it dependant on that stronger nation.

Well I come to realize not everything is 'bush's fault and he's 'trying' but like I said(in another thread?) He started out in a horrible term 911, having to go to war with iraq, and katrina. Just no Clinton for '08 please.

I think they say America should do what they want us to do. Which would be pretty nice, but as you can see not even we can get America to do what we want it to. In my opinion this is a problem with representative democracy as combined with political parties and mass media. Politicians throw money around to win elections, then do whatever they want for the next few years, a lot of which involves getting more money to throw at the next election. Oh, and most of that money ends up in the midwest.

A person with an IQ of 70 can "try" to add 7 + 8, but if you were smart you'd just sit around and play games with them and keep them company, and leave the real jobs to someone who can handle it.

Its not even about setting a good example, its about taking responsibility for the damage we've done to the planet over the past 60 years. The United States is responsible for more than the majority of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as well as the myriad of other problems with our environment, and thus we should sholder the brunt of the responsibility for fixing it. I'm not saying the other future world powers shouldn't have to be responsible for their emissions and pollutants, but being too stuborn to take care of what we caused is stupid as well.

I honestly don't give a shit what the US does as long as it does not do harm to others. I simply despise how our society uses every little thing the US does to hide the fact that we have a fucked up goverment.

Edit: As im sure most other countries do to.

I didn't say that now did I, but China has just recently begun to industrialize and contribute to global carbon levels, US has been at it for over half a century. Not to mention we contribute a much larger amount of pollution and carbon with 33% of the population of China than they do.

We're actually less than a fourth of China's size (current US POP just passed 300mil, China just passed 1.3 billion), and despite what you might have been told, China has been producing pollutants for nearly as long as we have. I don't know if you've ever been to china, but it doesn't look like this:
