We don't know how things work when people are sealed up in the death god thing. He may have been conscious in there the entire time for all we know. What else would he do but train to control the kyuubi. Or if you don't like that explanation... Kurama s a good guy now. He is BFFs with Naruto and doesn't want Madara to win. Why would he not allow Minato to use his full power?

The latest 100 or so chapters have been nothing but a never-ending stream of plot-armored asspulls and the plot's stopped behing coherent with itself a long ass while ago. I weep at the thought of how the manga will eventually wrap up, given these premises.
