Why wouldn't Madara be aware of the eight gates? It seemed like pretty common knowledge to everyone, it's just that it's a forbidden jutsu. Am I misunderstanding something here?

i think it'd be rare to see, espeically since very few ninja absolutely suck at everything minus H2H skill. Let alone having a guy or two both capable of opening so many gates.

Kakashi was able to recognize it early on in the manga and he's pretty low on the totem pole of hax bullshit and/or knowledge. That's why I figured the eight gates was common knowledge, it's just rare because, well, you die lol.

kakashi knew it early on because he and Guy have been friends since childhood, and guy knew/was learning them then. Kakashi's suprise was that he had taught them to Lee

Right, but my point is where is this conjecture of the eight gates being some kind of secret jutsu coming from? It isn't too far fetch for Madara to have seen someone use the eight gates before to know it emits red steam. I'd argue it probably happened quite often during his era since everyone seemed to have a boner for using forbidden jutsus, back before the establishment of hidden villages.

The Gates are part of common chakra "physiology"; there's nothing secret about it. What's rare is to find someone capable and willing to open them due to the side-effects. Supposedly anyone can do it with enough intense physical training, which Guy and Lee are specialists at. Hell even Kakashi was able to open the first Gate.

i think the forbidden jutsu are, well, forbidden, BECAUSE of the war Madara was in, so they weren't technically forbidden then. That being said, how many people do you think were able to attain such a thing? remember how kakashi flipped the fuck out when he found out that not only could Lee open gates, but open (i think) 6 at such an early age? it was because the physical prowess needed to open so many is a rarity. So maybe the technique itself wasn't rare (gates in general), but to get to blue and even red is something rarely seen.
