Part of me feels like the Gates are like utilizing the frog kata stuff mentioned eons ago, but without the benefits of sage mode durability. Thus, you fuck yourself up. So, him showing up in Sage mode and stabilizing him would make more sense, but it could just be more simply the Sage's whole "I created nisshu to help people!" or whatever.

Probably, but in the origin sense, Kishi hasn't really elaborated on how the Gates came about other than it being shit tai jutsu onry guys seem to wield. I suspect Naruto saving him is also more complex than just some kind of chakra shock paddle. At the very least, this fix is directly tied to knowledge/power gained from the sage and we also know sage mode was the only thing to really hurt Madara/Obito prior.

Gai can definitely at least use the Summoning Jutsu. Perhaps he learned it later in life, or he hid his ability to use chakra because his father could never use Ninjutsu.
