The original series is great, just skip the fillers. Can't give an opinion on Shippudden as I was just a manga reader by then and couldn't be bothered to keep watching the slow anime pace. I'd imagine that is going to be the case for it, though. A lot of the shounen jump series get really slow to avoid doing filler towards the middle/end and become kinda painful to get through. I love One Piece but that's why I stopped watching that one, same with Naruto.

Definitely the manga, especially during the Shippudden era of episodes. The anime flat-out botches some of the most memorable battles and weaves fillers in and out of the story making it difficult to just focus on canon.

The two Naruto incarnations are more than 1/3 filler each, ToS being roughly 40% and Shippuden around 36% if the math done on one of the forums is correct. While some of it isn't bad if you're binge watching the series and is skippable if you use internet guides, that may be a huge turnoff for some people. The anime is about 40-50 chapters behind and the pacing just feels off at times as things feel artificially stretched out to keep from having to do more filler. I personally think the manga is the way to go unless you're a die hard fan that just wants to see everything.

There are some fights worth watching though. More or less all the pre-skip, non-filler fights are rad. Anything J-Man is dope. Naruto/Pein is good... until the 1 on 1 showdown and the Anime goes all Looney Toons with it. There are a few other really good post-skip fights too. Sasuke/Itachi, Sakura/Chiyo/Sasori, Sasuke/Bee, there are others too but I can't think of em at the moment.

Plenty of pre-skip stuff is worth watching as was said. The entirety of the chuunin exams and the whole sound four/kimimaro stuff was all some of the best the show had to offer imo.
Also, Zabuza/Haku was that tightness near the start.

I never read the Manga. I guess if you want the full experience you could read them. IMO anime is enough.

Is it releasing on DVD so fast? I thought it would have a theatre run first? Meaning the DVD/Bluray wouldn't come out for like 6~9 months.

Of course, someone pirating it in the theatres is another thing all together
