Yea they teased during this episode's preview by going back to everyone shielded by Sasuke's Susanoo for a hot minute. Oh huzzah back to the main event! Nope. But yea this looks like it could be pretty good filler.

Chapter seemed FFT-tier convoluted. Can someone stupify it for me? I don't remember them ever explaining shit about that kid in the after manga gaiden, so I'm assuming it's his origin story of some sort?

More or less. He's the 6th test-tube baby of Orochimaru. The 5th was the samurai doode who tried to win him over. Orochimaru and the 5th test-tube baby (TTB for short now) basically tried to test/trick the 6th TTB to see what sort of capacity he had as a TTB and I guess he passed the test because Boruto will be his friend or whatever and will prevent him from going rogue/evil/etc ala how Naruto eventually helped the Sauce.

But yeah, he's just a test tube baby with Sage powers that equal/surpass Orochimaru who suddenly wants to be a dad/mom/whatever.
