This is purely speculation:

Itachi claimed the requirement for Mangekyou was killing your best friend. I would wonder what about that action would trigger it, and I'd assume it would have to be the emotion associated with the act. In Sasuke, we've seen activation and tomoe upgrades come from life/death types of situations where emotions would probably be taken to an extreme. So, based on that, one might guess that Kakashi blames himself for Obito's death and convinced himself that he killed him or those emotions festering for a long period of time allowed him to trigger it with some additional amount of effort/strain since he is not an Uchiha.

Otherwise, there could be an alternate requirement that Kakashi discovered.

It doesn't seem like he knows any techniques though because he can only open a portal to another dimension which is only half of the genjutsu. Perhaps because he's not Uchiha

Maybe with sasuke running away(his main pupil), he was saddened even more by it, losing one of his "best friends", which in-turn activated the mangekyou sharingan?

That's possible, in many ways Kakashi and Sasuke were alike and Kakashi was always trying to get Sasuke to see things a different way like the Fourth did with him back in the day.

Uh... the dimensional hole is a technique. The genjutsu Tsukuyomi doesn't cause any physical change or move the person to another dimension. Kakashi's spacehole actually destroys things, which would make it a ninjutsu I guess; an extremely powerful ninjutsu, nearly to the same degree as Amaterasu.

He activated his MS because he and the rest of the crew minus Yamato were about to enter where they thought Sasuke was, and they knew Madara and Zetsu were there too. So basically, he activated it because he was readying himself for a battle that didn't happen.

According to the spoilers, Madara tells Sasuke that Itachi staged the entire fight to drain all his chakra. Once all his chakra was drained, he couldn't keep Orochimaru suppressed any more and Itachi was able to kill him. Madara reminds Sasuke that Itachi was taking a look at his neck to see if the cursed seal was still there after he killed Orochimaru. Basically Madara says that "you have to lose the person closest to you", in this case, Orochimaru for Sasuke, in order to activate the Mangekyu Sharingan. Itachi was just activating Mengekyu for Sasuke through the battle lol That also explains how Kakashi activated his, not by killing his best friend but by losing the person closest to him

Well, it could have been Sasuke... He was basically Kakashi Jr. until he left the village. It would also work out with Kakashi having Mangekyo after the timeskip.
