Because 8 tails was full-blown there and all it took was a shot of Amaterasu... which Itachi had to use just to get away from Jiraiya that one time, and Jiraiya was seriously wounded when he had to subdue a 4-tails Naruto. I'm pretty disappointed; knowing Sasuke had to win I was still expecting something more than a simple 1-shot victory.

A lame end to a lame enemy doesn't bother me all that much. Just imagine we'll wind up having a couple chapters blown on Sasuke evading Lightning Village pursuit while Naruto goes through the book.

On the whole, you can probably think about this group as a bunch of Orochimaru's elites. Not quite Akatsuki level individually. 1 on 1, 8-tails probably would've killed all of them. Just thinking about FFXI and how the JPs seem to favor the whole over the individual, I can't really fault a display of teamwork and eventual success at the hands of a move we've never seen anyone technically take without knowing about it beforehand. Bullboy fucked himself over by fighting an enemy group he knew nothing about in a setting where nothing was at stake other than pride instead of running.

Hell, I hated Deidara and he at least had some more personality. I don't think we were ever meant to give a shit about 8-tails as an individual. Plot no jutsu, etc..
