That part was fine. I'm thinking you glossed over the line where he said he did everything at the start because of jealousy. Maybe it's my Sasuke hating clouding things?
Eg. It's one thing to try to be like Micheal Jordan because you admire him, its another to take up basketball because you got jealous.

Well, going with your analogy there, Naruto did want to become a ninja and the hokage before he ever met Sasuke. So he didn't do those things because of Sasuke. I just think it was his acting out that he did out of jealousy. Early Naruto wasn't that confident on the inside, but he still made boasts and such. If you recall during the Zabuza arc Naruto was self-doubting his ability to even react in the first skirmish and Naruto also froze on the road vs two random ninjas early on (with the whole "scaredy cat" line from Sasuke coming after this) so Naruto's self-confidence early on was all an act for others and I can see that being just because of Sasuke.

Edit: Eh, they're two separate things. You can have long term goals/aspirations (Hokage) and still have short-term worries and hopes (being popular like Sasuke and getting that respect). He's always had the former and in the academy he got the latter. And it makes sense, how's he going to become the best ninja in the village if he can't even be the best ninja in his class? My take on it would be that originally Naruto hated Sasuke for whatever reason with jealousy from being popular and then when he found out a bit more about Sasuke backround it turned into respect and such. To throw in an analogy: Kid gets into med school and is top in his class. Good for him, I don't care. You find out same kid had his family gunned down when he was 4 and made it to leading his class in med school while being in foster care for most of his life. Now you respect him.

Since he met Sasuke fairly early in life(around 5~7 i'd guess?) and if i recall properly it was right after/during his "emo phase" so the timing of his first " i wanna be hokage" moment and the first time he ran into sasuke (right after the massacre) have to be fairly close together. I personally figured they were at the same time because of this chapter.

Do you have a link of when Naruto and Sasuke first met? I didn't know that was even put in the story as a specific time/flashback.

The 1st time we see Sasuke chronologically is when he's in the uchiha village, and Naruto is never seen nor talked of.
1st time we see Sasuke in the manga is when both sasuke and naruto are in the same class.

That's how it is as far as my knowledge goes. Which leads me to believe that Naruto and Sasuke met in the academy, so Naruto's big dreams of being the best ninja and the Hokage came before Sasuke was in the picture.

Naruto looked up to Sasuke because he saw him as being "alone" like he was and saw that Sasuke was overcoming being alone and was really strong despite it all. Which actually deals with this latest chapter because originally Naruto thought he was just like Sasuke.

And another note about Sasuke. I know there are a lot of Sasuke haters and it's getting a bit annoying now. While Sasuke's been given a bit more face time than he probably "should" be getting, his character is developed enough to be the main character in another series. Want to know a series with a main character similar to Sasuke?

Naruto's admiration of Sasuke was first revealed during their fight at the Valley of the End. I don't imagine it was too long after they entered the academy.

If Naruto was rarely mentioned, it might have been because the Uchiha clan was sort of ghettoized, and confined to their own little section of the village. They probably weren't current on much of the news, let alone the doings of the jinchuriki.

Sees him sitting on his own and realizes they're both alone. Right after the massacre, if I remember correctly. That scene has been shown in multiple flashbacks.

Dude, I know half the time you're just spouting off some bullshit theories, but sadly.. those theories could actually come to pass, Haha. If you come up with them, or grab them from other places, they are still usually some of the more entertaining reads in these threads, so thanks for that. Yeah. Some people would probably think Sasuke would maybe want to realize that he's been pulled along like a lapdog with Madara, but I actually think he'd just get mad and jealousrage all over Naruto or something.
